I think the TB only converted after he left office. He's wise enough not to let his beliefs be seen as possibly influencing his job. We really ought to have a secular government; it's the obvious way to prevent religious persecution.

Under the Catholic Relief Act of 1829, “no person professing the Catholic religion” was allowed to advise the monarch on the appointment of Anglican bishops. Given the PM's role in the Church of England, having a catholic PM could have been awkward. this was not repealed until 1983. Boris Johnson is catholic, but he didn't "come out" until after he'd assumed office. Tony Blair too is catholic but he'd left office by the time this was made public.

The problem is that people of faith are not people of reason. They believe that their god or old book should hold sway over everyone else's behaviour. They don't seek to persuade, they seek to convert. They don't seek to serve the human beings of their nation, they seek to serve their god's rules.
