They say young people need to 'see it to be it' The forerunners will be more visible so those that follow don't need to make an issue of it. But it's a lonely place where you can feel very vulnerable.
It wasn't so long ago that racism was the focus, it still exists but is more widely condemned, homophobia will be another challenge, unfortunately the groups most likely to understand the problems of being a persecuted minority are those most likely to have a cultural, or religious aversion to homosexuality. As it was pointed out to me when a victim of an anti lesbian attack ( pre Dave when I was in a long term same sex relationship) there is a hierarchy of isms and homophobia is a long way down the pecking order behind racism , religious persecution, sexism and the disabled rights campaign. The perpetrator was a black, South African, fundamentalist Christian.
