"With no annoying adverts..."

I'm afraid you haven't been paying attention. More and more time is devoted to advertising stuff on the many BBC outlets, radio, TV and web.
It's not soap powder or Viagra but it is advertising.
I don't want to pay G. Lineker's salary! We watch very little BBC - the news, and some quizzes really although there are some goodies like the Repair shop and Gardeners' World. We do, or did, watch BBC4, but can't now find it. BBC 1 is now down to BBC N. Ireland - all the others have disappeared. I've tried and tried to sort it, but OH has been v. ill (hospital job) and I just don't understand electronics. Cheesed off - we didn't used to have to pay - OH is 89.

I agree that the BBC do have their own 'advertising breaks', but they're not as long as a commercial channel break, where each slot appears to last around 4 minutes. Also, remember that the commercial channels have breaks within the actual programmes themselves.

My beef is less about funding a national broadcaster with public money (although the licence this is and always was a crap system). It's having paid, having no influence on demanding no PC/woke nonsense is supported and there's no political bias.
How not to have a biased and not impartial BBC.
Have beholden to the latest Government and all its neurosis and twisted logic.

it boils down to choice, as sp eluded to about fox news, or i like coke but i pay for pepsi, what if i wanted neither, have to sell my tv set
that i might use as a monitor for example, the license is an outdated
tax or fee, call it what you will, as i said i watch no bbc, specially not the news, as i find it bias and has to much sports updates on it, hate sports..iv tried netflix apple amazon disney(quick trial) kiddy service to me and not interested in it, netflix amazon apple mmm, i flip between, but it's my choice my money, when and where.

See if you can register as a non-BBC viewer. I'd be interested to see whether this is possible.

I have a feeling that you're not paying solely for the BBC but also for infrastructure used by commercial channels.
BBC license fee?Whats that then?My TV goes fine enough without needing a bit of paper.God knows who does pay the license fee?Us Scots dont pay for stuff that should be free anyway.
Question Author
i would cancel paying the license, but iv read people still get letters after they have cancelled, and they keep coming, plus i do nt want some person knocking at my door threatening court etc, i dont want that at my age or my wife, in this day and age, being threatened with court endless letters, really..over a bloody tv viewing, and it allowed by law Really, im sorry but this has to stop, subscription it.
It’s not the cost that gets my goat, it’s the mandatory nature of it . So arguments put forth about value for money are irrelevant. It is indeed a form of taxation . You are legally required to pay for something that you don’t want (in my case anyway) and have no control over what is produced, except for the off switch. How is that value for Money for me? How is GL’s salary value for money when you have zero interest in football, or sport in general . Why should I be legally required to pay his salary and fund his “comfortable” lifestyle . In any case I watch very little tv , never live broadcasts , never the beeb, but that is incidental, and I use the internet for radio stations. I run software on my iMac to access (mostly) English language stations language stations across the world.. I am capable of recognising tosh when I hear it and I use the off switch when I do. Before the internet I used short wave radio to get my info , and still do, but the same stations via internet are much easier to access, and maintaining my large antenna is getting a bit beyond my old bones. I think the bbc is a metropolitan based , liberal, left leaning organisation obsessed with wokery and capturing something called the youth audience. I gave up on it years ago, and cannot understand why I am still required to fund it. Change required, the sooner the better.
Btw, correct me if I am wrong , but my understanding that if you only use a radio and don’t have a tv ,or don’t use that tv to watch live broadcasts , then you don’t need a licence ,
You lot need a licence to watch TV?
That's archaic.
Is it like a driver's licence?
Tests regularly?
Aircooled \but my understanding that if you only use a radio and don’t have a tv\

If you possess only a radio (eg. DAB) and no other device capable of receiving broadcasts which are streamed eg. Smartphone, Laptop and any other device which can connect to the internet, then you do not require a TV licence!!
"When don’t I need a licence to watch TV?

You don’t need a TV Licence if you never watch live on any channel, TV service or streaming service, or use BBC iPlayer*.

This applies to any device, including a TV, computer, laptop, phone, tablet, games console or digital box."

sp1814: "Cheapest and best channel. For me it’s hyper good value.

It’ll be £172 a year (£14.33) a month. For the number of channels available, plus radio, plus iPlayer plus their sport and news coverage - I think it’s a bargain." - wow, I actually agree with SP!
ACF: "It’s not the cost that gets my goat, it’s the mandatory nature of it" - it's not mandatory, as described above it can be avoided.
//You don’t need a TV Licence if you never watch live on any channel, TV service or streaming service, or use BBC iPlayer*.//

Corby

That's not correct is it ?

I thought it's if you dont have any device capable of receiving live TV , streaming , or player
https://www.gov.uk/tv-licence
You need a TV Licence if you:
watch or record live TV on any channel or service
use BBC iPlayer

So if you only watch any of the streaming services then you're fine. It's only if you receive TV as it is broadcast on any channel.

Sometimes they broadcast sports "live" on Prime, not sure if that's ok or not.
