there's a very telling paragraph in Zacs link:
"There are other problems. AlphaCode requires tens of billions of trillions of operations per problem—computing power that only the largest tech companies have. And the problems it solved from the online programming competitions were narrow and self-contained. But real-world programming often requires managing large code packages in multiple places, which requires a more holistic understanding of the software, Solar-Lezama says." - yes ever more power and data can impersonate "intelligence" .
Yes, I saw that TTT along with other little Gems in there.

I did wonder why ZM put it up, it doesnt prove his case at all if you understand the subject matter.
What amuses me is when I read reports that AI will threaten human existence. But AI (as far as I know) is able to prevent humans from reaching for the "Off" switch.
Sorry to be pedantic, but artificial Intelligence is exactly what this is.

If it were to be called machine intelligence, you would have a point in saying there's no such thing.

Yes, what they've done is ridiculous, and I hope it costs them dearly.

No, it is not artificial Intelligence. Someone programmed it to do exactly what it did. A machine did not think up the idea and carry it out.

It is simply following a complex and complicated programme, but that is all it is.

tomus: "Sorry to be pedantic, but artificial Intelligence is exactly what this is." - no, it's Psuedo Intelligence, ie that which pretends to be..... and that is what it does, it gives the impression of intelligence when none exists.
So would you say, for the time being at least, that a skynet style awakening and human extermination are a way off?
Probably 75 years.

probably most of us won't have to worry Kardy!
Read some Asimov
Question Author
I have read a lot of Asimov ZM, in fact I have read a lot of Sci Fi generally, what's your point?
Then you should know the path being taken and it's consequences. The horse has bolted and the stable door is beyond repair.
Question Author
Right oh!
This is simply a vehicle to carry 'code' and 'pseudo intelligence' into everyday speech.

An extension of project Vichy5C.
I agree with tomus, it's artificial intelligence. That's exactly what artificial means, as any dictionary will tell you: man made.
Question Author
No jno, artificial X means X created by artificial means. There is no intelligence in AI at all thus it is Psuedo Intelligence, something that is impersonating something real. For example a computer cannot generate a true random number, thus we call them Psuedo Random numbers when they are generated by a computer.
Pseudo, artificial, potatoes, potartoes.

The point is it's not real. I'll tell my aunty she's got a bowl of pseudo fruit on the sideboard and to stop calling it artificial.
Question Author
Maybe with plastic fruit but in IT tomus, it is a big difference.
Artificial is better than arty farty.
