//NJ, I think she continues to be elected because that’s an area with a huge ethnic population. I think she would win it even as an independent. Mr Starmer may well lose a seat there.//
That does not hold water, naomi. I know the area extremely well and still have connections there. At the last census some 61% of respondents identified as white with only 14% black. There is a sizeable Turkish population there but, most relevant to this question, there are large numbers of Jewish people resident in parts of the constituency, particularly Clapton and Stamford Hill. The latter is the centre of a strictly orthodox Hasidic Jewish community, said to be the largest in Europe, but “ordinary” Jews are well represented there also. The Hasidic community has been slowly migrating from the area to Canvey Island in Essex (which is a place I also know well and seems most unsuitable for such a community, but they are shrewd people and I suppose they know what they are doing).
The constituency has returned a Labour MP since it was formed in 1950 and I really cannot understand why. In recent years it has seen considerable “gentrification” and parts of it are akin to similar areas in neighbouring Islington (home of Tony Blair when he was in office). So I can see the “Champagne Socialists” providing Labour with some support. But I simply cannot understand the huge support that Labour enjoys there (at the last election Ms Abbott polled 70.1% of the votes cast). This is particularly so when the candidate offered is one so appalling as Ms Abbott yet they've elected her every time since 1987.
