It seems that any suspicion gives banks the right to close accounts, without explanation, to avoid risk, even when such suspicion/risk seems ridiculously small and remote. That seems wrong. Obviously society shouldn't tip off the bad guys that they are under suspicion, but one wonders what society thinks closing the accounts of everyone around them...
If they all don't want to know, that smacks of an 'old boy' network targeting Nigel. And that ought to be illegal. If someone claims something then proof is necessary before guilt is assigned.
He said a bit more than that, Barry - he explained why - but few bothered to listen to the rest because the first bit suited them just fine.
Seems to me the Privileges Committee really is … privileged. I’m truly ashamed of what this country has become - corrupt - and that’s something I never thought I’d say.
This has happened to a number of 'ordinary persons' in the UK, where their bank has closed the account and refuse to say why – but this closure is notified to all other UK banks and they cannot open another account with any UK bank. Often the reason is that some criminal activity has been connected with the account – but the bank will not divulge exactly what to the account holder.
If the bank has done this, then my bet is that following Chris Bryant’s statement in the House of Commons, the bank has noted a payment from some dodgy Russian into his account – and obliged to close his accounts (and notify other UK banks).
It's possible that Farage is misrepresenting things, eg overstating the situation slightly, or drawing a link that doesn't exist. But on the assumption that he's not, then this would be disturbing, and I hope whatever's going on is clarified soon.
No the bank is obliged to do this, as I said it has happened to many others – some where they have acted as ‘mules’ with the criminal proceeds passing through their account for a cut.
The police don’t care much if you’ve been defrauded of many thousands of pounds – if you are stupid enough to let criminals launder cash through your account (for a cut), then expect to be banned from holding a UK bank account.
This is nothing new . Since Brexit most Brits who live in the EU full time and are 100% legal in that Country have had their UK bank accounts closed down.
The above have been covered on Radio 4’s Money Box, in which it was explained persons who had laundered criminal proceeds through their account were banned from UK banking (from memory I think it was a 6 year ban).
//Since Brexit most Brits who live in the EU full time and are 100% legal in that Country have had their UK bank accounts closed down.//
And what has that to do with the price of fish? As far as I know, Mr Farage does not live in the EU full time. He lives in the village of Downe, in Kent.
Probably he’s had dealings with someone who is subject to UK Government sanctions over Russia.
The banks will automatically detect that and the bank(s) will avoid themselves being party to criminality.
What with the Ukraine conflict and the sanctions applied to many Russian oligarchs, if you have a bank account into which one of these oligarchs has made payments – that may be sufficient to trigger what has happened to this idiot.
