Do you think it appropriate for the calls to prayer, the 'Adhan', which is the Islamic call to public prayer from a mosque recited by a muezzin at prescribed times of the day. (Adhan is recited from the mosque five times daily, traditionally from the minaret) will sound out in Piccadilly circus, or that it is in fact a suitable place for a mosque anyway?
The new 'Trocadero' mosque, financed by a Muslim billionaire who it seems owns large swathes of London already. His initiative is of course welcomed by the London mayor & has been given the approval by the Labour-led London council.
There are strict controls on loudspeakers in mosques (as indeed there are on loudspeakers in buildings generally).
It makes little sense anyway in this context.
No doubt if they apply for a licence we'll soon hear about it :-)
ichkeria - the calls to prayer took a bit getting used to when I first worked in Albania. After a while they just became background noise like the church bells. We don't even have church bells in the UK any more, very sad.
Naomi, I read this:
"Despite concerns raised on noise grounds, given that queuing is unlikely to occur, and that the main hall is located at basement level, any noise associated with the use of the site as a prayer and community centre is expected to be well contained within the building itself and noise breakout is not anticipated. Subject to appropriate conditions, the proposal is considered to comply with relevant adopted City Plan 2019-2040 policies and is therefore recommended for approval.”

The query was specifically about the call to prayer.
Given the above though I think it is rather unlikely that they would be applying to do one.
Makes no sense anyway.
Zacs-Master ; //Khandro's been getting his info from some right wing loonie source. Again.//
As usual, when you are bereft of intelligent argument, you attempt shoot the messenger. You may think that The New Culture Forum is a "loonie source" but I & many others do not.
Personally I think that Islam has no place anywhere in the world, let alone Piccadilly Circus. It is a pernicious religion which preaches hatred and misogyny. But it's not alone. My belief (religion if you like) is that all organised religion should be proscribed. People who feel the need for that sort of thing can practise their dark arts in the privacy of their own homes.
I oft wonder how many mosques are required in this small isle and why. We have the largest mosque in Europe just down the road from us in Morden, one with planning permission pending in a closed down, would you believe, a pub in Worcester Park. A functioning Mosque in Southfields close to Wimbledon and another planning permission granted in Morden/Mitcham.
I can only assume the Muslim male population are keeping their several wives very busy in the nocturnal activities.
Fortunately no although the large minaret is equipped with loud speakers to ease the Iman’s tonsils. At 5am I am not yet wearing my hearing aids as they don’t function in the shower. :-)
