Rishi Sunak has a plan to revive chess in Britain. The PM is set to announce half-a-million pounds funding for the English Chess Federation. The money could be used to send teams to international tournaments, install chess tables in parks and teach the game to school kids.
i have never liked chess but the ECF brings joy to many people and has done so for a long time so of course i am very happy for them and hope that this sets a precedent for funding cultural activities
It's a good idea. Lots of schools used to have 'Chess Clubs' as one of the normal 'extras' which staff & able children ran. This has more or less died-out.
Chess is good, lots of other activities on offer would also be welcomed. I once ran an after school drama group for instance, and an athletics club later on, but that depended on staff organising these activities voluntarily.
