I'ts not so much the fact that firearms are readily available, it's the type of firearm. A handgun for self-defence is one thing, a high-powered assault rifle is another.

Again . ,! RIP .

Unfortunately they wont..theyve got their constitution and all its handy amendments...

"Second Amendment  Right to Bear Arms

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.".....

The suspect in these shooting is said to have just been released from a psychiatric hospital.

Access to automatic weapons, indeed any weapons, shouldn't be available to mentally ill people.

Why does this seem to only happen in America?

Its a constant news feed?

Maybe their gun laws have something to do with it ?

There are nearly 200 other countries in the world and yet the only country in the entire world that we hear these stories from is the USA?

Why don't we hear of multiple knife killings in uk schools?

Or multiple clubbings of french students? ect?

Why just America?

19.54/ ... and it was reported on TV that he is a firearms instructor!

There are a number of factors involved, including, but not limited to - the sheer size of the population, coupled with the sheer number of illegal guns, and ease of access to all types of guns, coupled with the American 'frontier' psyche that insists on guns being a good idea, makes the level of toxic mix that causes this sort of situation.

The ease and simplicity of access to guns by mentally unbalanced people means that the only query here is why this sort of tragedy does not happen more often than mercifully it does, heaven knows all the factors are in place every minute of every day and night.

Granted Andy,

but the fact remains that out over 200 countries on the planet,

it seems that school shootouts are an American phenomona?

Why?

Other countries have guns. other schoolkids have access to knives etc.

I think gun control is a state and not federal matter....

one of wisest and most articulate mods is wrong about illegal guns:

https://www.statista.com/statistics/476461/mass-shootings-in-the-us-by-legality-of-shooters-weapons/

so easy to get a licence that illegal guns arent a thing. This one is a firearms instructor so must have a licence really

mass shootings in England here

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mass_shootings_in_the_United_Kingdom

( gtr than four injured) - one in Jan 2023 and two in 2022 ( knives included to keep up numbers I think)

Hate to say this - but it's 'fashionable'.  You have a grievance against society for some reason or another. In your society the examples of retribution are established as school and generally social gun crimes.  So they are the examples you follow. Self-perpetuating and very, very sad - but that is  humanity for you.

jourdain - // Hate to say this - but it's 'fashionable'. //

Following fashion is the application of a rational mind.

Shooting strangers is the application of an irrational mind.

I doubt the two are connected.

Seems they are about to arrest him right now.

Or it could be a long stand off.

I believe more people are dead .

Serves  me right for listening to CNN.

False alarm.

This is the 565th mass shooting this year alone. To answer your question, never, the gun lobby is too strong and it's political suicide to try and address the issue. When the 2nd amendment was ratified I don't think they meant to arrive at what they have today. There are 330m Americans and the average number of guns is 1.2, that's a lot of instruments of death. You can buy guns and ammo at their equivalent of a car boot sale no questions asked. Basically they need to start again but they can't.

Guns are on sale in Walmart, between hardware and sports items.

'On average, the US has seen more than 39,000 gun deaths a year since 2014'

that's a frightening statistic. Pandora's box cannot be shut tho.

I'ts not so much the fact that firearms are readily available, it's the type of firearm. A handgun for self-defence is one thing, a high-powered assault rifle is another.
