What's Going On ?
I feel saddened, and sickened to learn that the lovely, Maureen Lipman now has to have police protection because of warped Jew-haters in England ! Maureen who has brought so much fun & life into our lives, remember those British Telecom adverts, not to mention her stage work, which has included appearances with the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.
I see now at least, The Express, this morning is refering to those loathsome street demonstions as, 'Hate Marches'.

That's a bit OTT, Khandro. She's just another actress, isn't she? Does she have to have to have police protection, as Ken pointed out? What about other actors/actresses who are of Asian, perhaps Muslim, origin? Should they have police/security protection as well?
For years so much has been ignored, pandered to and excused for the sake of maintaining the appearance at least of social cohesion and racial harmony, now it appears to be crunch time - and this is the closest we've ever been to crunch time - I don't think anyone in authority knows what to do. What can they do? What should they do?
There are some sick people about. For many of them, it's all mouth. But for some it's more than that.
Social media is the "all mouth". Any celeb has some nice things said about them, some not so nice things said about them, and some downright sick and nasty things said about them. That's for any celeb, but more so if they are a "minority" (or "deviant") in some way. So, for example, Rachel Riley ... some antisemitic comments may be thrown at her by people who are genuinely antisemitic; and other comments may be thrown at her by people who are just Sick.
Different celebs deal with it in different ways. Some ignore it, some respond to it, a very few take their own lives as a result of it ... it's a scourge.
With what's going on in Gaza, it's inevitable that lots of the social media commentary, including the Sick stuff, is about that. It's deplorable and, unfortunately, unavoidable given the way social media has become. It's not surprising that some people have bodyguards, but don't mistake social media for a genuine high risk of physical safety for anyone in particular.

Celebrities are prime targets - we all know that. That said, compacency has backfired on us more than once and we would be very foolish to adopt that attitude in this situation. Offend or please, and as unsavoury as the truth might be to some, we should acknowledge that Jews have good reason to be fearful.... because they have.
I think social media has a lot to answer for. I've read and enjoyed most of Maureen Lipmans books. She has never hidden the fact she is Jewish, it's what defines her but there are people who are less free about their roots and this should be understood. I did not know Rachel Riley is Jewish and I don't know much about a lot of people. If that's how they want it, that's how it should stay.
