I have some sympathey with this guy because for many years the Railcard providers used to send out renewal reminders. They have recently ceased this practice - fortunately I spotted mine at the last renewal and proceeded accordingly, otherwise but for the grace of God. . . . . . .

( 50 y ago a uni student in his first y, borrow !ed a card to buy a rail ticket and then gave the card back to the user. So he didnt have it when the ticket was checked. oops ! got a criminal record for dishonesty before age 20. we all went christ we wont do that)
