"i don't think science has much to say on the subject of identity as it's not a very scientific part of human society"
I suppose that depends whether you believe that a man can credibly "identify" as something he isn't. Since gender has become a matter of opinion, it follows that opinions on such a topic can vary. A few weeks ago there were reports in the paper of children "identifying" as animals (mainly cats). It was dismissed by most as ridiculous. In my opinion a man "identifying" as a woman is equally so. In fact, I find the entire subject of people identifying as something they are not as ridiculous, especially when they expect other people to share their opinion by indulging them in their fantasy.
Biology does have a bit to say on the subject, and it recognises that gender identity and biological sex are complicated. As is sexuality, for that matter. And that was a mistake we made in the past -- arguing (falsely) that people expressing other than heterosexuality were unnatural, and further using that as an excuse to treat them as immoral.
It was wrong then with sexuality. It's wrong today with gender.
Atheist, //Some very bitter and intolerant people here…. //
'Tolerance' is defined as the ability or willingness to tolerate the existence of opinions or behaviour that one dislikes or disagrees with. Where's your 'tolerance'?
//Why do you do it?//
Those who shout loudest in their demands for 'tolerance', despite all their virtue-signalling - and that's exactly what it is - are actually patronising those demanding tolerance and are therefore demeaning them. All I see the 'intolerant' here saying is 'Do what you like, be who you are, but don't demand that I lie to endorse your fantasy'. Life, whether it suits us or not, is something we all have to deal with.
If i want to sell a mini, does adverising it as a Rolls Royce make it a mini ?
if i put a RR flying lady on the mini bonnet , doest it make it a mini ?
I can change as may parts as i like on the mini...its still a mini..
If i keep trying to pass it off as a mini not only an i deluded im also lying as i know its not a mini...
and guess what nobody else is going to go along with it and pretend its a Rolls Royce and why should they ?
Naomi: "Those who shout loudest in their demands for 'tolerance', despite all their virtue-signalling - and that's exactly what it is - are actually patronising those demanding tolerance and are therefore demeaning them." - Bang on, refusing to buy in to the latest cobras on the basis of common sense, logic, biology etc is not anywhere near as "Intolerant" as the Nouveau fascism that is being imposed on the populace at the moment. You will have the correct opinion or be punished. Look at the abuse people like JK Rowling have suffered because they dare to oppose this new tyranny. That's the real intolerance.
I never understand why people demand such 'tolerance' TTT. It's like short lists for jobs where minority groups are given preference. I wouldn't want to be given preference. That, I would find, demeaning. If I can't stand on my own two feet and be confident that my choices and talents will see me through, I don't want other people to patronise me by conceding to my wishes becanse they feel sorry for me.
"A few weeks ago there were reports in the paper of children "identifying" as animals (mainly cats). "
to the best of my recollection this did not actually happen
"I rather thought that Biology has quite a lot to say on the subject."
only if one believes that one's identity should be determined by one's biology... but that is an ideological stance that most people do not adhere to. lots of people have a strong sense of national identity for example that is extremely important to them... but nations don't "scientifically" exist, they are created by common acts of ritual, imagination, and expression. nations aren't "real" in any tangible sense but they are important.
some people likewise have an extremely strong sense of gender identity even though gender does not materially exist.

No, it did not. It was reported that a debate arose around how to respond if it did, but the school stated that there was no such pupil actually identifying as a cat.
//
“The most ridiculous aspect of that media and political noise was the suggestion that children were identifying as animals in schools on a widespread basis – something we have never heard of and never had reported to us by any school or college leader.
“We would urge politicians in particular to establish the facts before leaping on stories in the media and remember that there are real people – students, staff, and parents – who are deeply affected by suddenly finding themselves in the eye of a manufactured storm.” //
