It is, but a limited bonus IMO. What I'd hope for is a recovery from the main stump, perhaps multiple shoots all around the remaining base.

Very good news. I am amazed how relatively short the timespan is for these seedlings to mature into an adult tree. Should they survive hopefully 20-25 years. Alas I won't be there to see it.

Nature is wonderful. Had a very large forsythia bush which was uprooted during a storm. Ready to go for recycling I needed something for a clematis to grow up.  Stuck a branch from the forsythia into the ground and hey presto I have a lovely forsythia bush once more.

Yes it is, it would be even better news if they found the mental prat that did it.

It is good news indeed but I saw it earlier and thought in this day and age of social media and tech that follows us around that nobody has been held responsible yet. It was such a wicked act and surely not done out of any political reason that may justify it but purely from wanton disrepect for anything..

They don't need all this science to grow a sycamore tree. I've had in the past 1000's of seedlings growing on my allotment!

Me neither Retro but at least we know about it.

Police have had 2 guys out on bail for months now it seems but not moved the case any further forward:-(

And did the Clematis grow Maggie?

Prudie I don't understand the mentality of someone who thinks it is a good idea to go and cut that beautiful old tree down.  What the heck is wrong with them.  If they are proven guilty I wonder what their punishment will be.

Mental prat sounds an ideal description to me nb1.

There are a lot of planting of young trees taking place all around the UK, it can be a back breaking job although they have gangs of people doing it. Instead of serving jail time and a fine, my punishment would be 12 months of this back breaking job of planting new trees. It would also be entertaining for us all to watch. :0) Plus make them pay for x amount of the trees he/ she plants.

It is, but a limited bonus IMO. What I'd hope for is a recovery from the main stump, perhaps multiple shoots all around the remaining base.

Lovely news! Nature is truly wonderful..

This is great news that a new tree has started growing, a treasure for the future. Let us hope it is safe from another tree vandal.

hang the man resposible you shout.but what about all the trees and people uprooted for hs2,and why is one tree more important than the next

Sometimes theres need, most times no need. ^^

Tommy I'm p'd off about those as well and there are others I'm sure.  However this thread is about the Sycamore Gap tree.

Some trees close to me at home have Preservation Orders on them and I am so pleased about that.

I agree OG, that would be the best thing possible.

Ladybirder - yes, the clematis did grow and still puts in an annual appearance threading through the forsythia.
