The UK last had Compulsary Identity cards cards during WW2. But they were finally withdrawn by Churchhill in 1952 and have never been used since. And most Brits don't want them. But suddenly they have been introduced again by the present Tory Govt but only when you go to the polling station  Why! I ask.

RETRO, the claim about Jacob Rees-Mogg wasn't a fairy story and GULLIVER wasn't lying, was he?
22:20 Fri 03rd May 2024

You are wasting your time there retro

https://news.sky.com/story/jacob-rees-mogg-suggests-requiring-photo-id-to-vote-was-attempt-to-gerrymander-which-came-back-to-bite-tories-12881602

'Speaking at the National Conservatism conference in Westminster, Mr Rees-Mogg said: "Parties that try and gerrymander end up finding their clever scheme comes back to bite them, as dare I say we found by insisting on voter ID for elections.

"We found the people who didn't have ID were elderly and they by and large voted Conservative, so we made it hard for our own voters and we upset a system that worked perfectly well.'

He was claiming it was introduced to benefit the Tories but it backfired.

Oh come on Corby you might have given gulliger more time to reply 😂

retro simply decided Gulliver was making it up, and decided it was easier to sneer than to check. Not for the first time, Gulliver wasn't making it up. But I don't expect to see any apologies.

Given guliiver's track of a) posting misleading or inaccurate info (this OP is a good example) and

b) ignoring the opportunity to engage sensibly with anyone

it's hardly surprising people are cynical. He treats everyone on this website like some sort of Untermensch

It's not hard to understand why Retro spent the whole of his career in the police force in uniform plodding the beat .Bet he would have loved to have been a detective.

ichkeria, Untermensch was a popular word with Nazis; let's not be using it in relation to ABers.

All I asked for was gulliver to provide a link to what he claimed . He still has failed to do so. It is customary, when making announcements to provide a link. Why can he not do so.?

As always the TCL has to come to his rescue. Thanks TCL but in future could you please allow gulliver to answer for himself otherwise we might consider he constantly needs a wet nurse to look after him when posting fairy tales on the site.

erm says the tories jolly wheeze came back to bite them - that is old tories cdnt vote whereas previously they could

( altho such is denied in the wise, wise halls of AB)

No TCL. It wasn't a fairy story and I apologise to gulliver for accusing him of making up the story which he so often does.

He is,however, still stupid enough to believe what JRM says. JRM is a maverick and there can be no advantage to either party for possessing photo ID at the polls.

Susan Hall, the Tory London Mayoral candidate was issuing instructions to her hopeful Tory electorate how to apply for a Voting ID card as she realised that more senior voters may have long since hung up their driving gloves,do not possess a photo Driving Licence or indeed a valid passport.

The notion that gulliver believes and claims it gives the Tories an advantage is fanciful and ridiculous as is most of his posts. I will concede and apologise to him and  that JRM also made this stupid statement.

Couldn't we just be microchipped like our pets?

Plenty of EU countries have I.D cards, some compulsary. not just to vote.

TheCorbyLoon @ 23.20 For Best Answer by far.🤣😂😅😁😉

Isn't it time to leave all posts by Gulliver unanswered?  Every time someone responds, it's a win for him.  (Damn, I've done it myself - but it's the last time I'll try to have an intelligent conversation with him.)

Because government/parliament is a control freak. Politicians like to claim they went in to improve things but most only mean their career, and likely all enter for the ability to push their agenda, regardless of who the trample over to do it. ID cards is a monitoring thing, you will prove yourself to the government by showing your papers and obeying without question (and be happy whether you like it or not).

Ichkeria @ 22.20 This is a typical reply by you to try and save face .After your earlier replies.21.39 and 21.49.Also I do not treat everyone on this site like " Untermench" even if you do .OK.

Arrods 09.28 "It's the last time I'll try to have an intelligent Conversation with him" *Never knew that you had ever tried*

-- answer removed --

They say that ID is needed at polling stations to prevent fraud. It seems like using a slegehammer to crack a nut.
