five million german soldiers died during ww2 (presumably not including their allies who participated in barbarossa) and of those four million died on the eastern front fighting the soviet union... at any one time about 75-80% of German resources were held up there 

the most important and most dangerous missions undertaken by uk forces were supplying the USSR with american goods as you say. about 80% of allied casualties were from of the soviet union.

The Russians were defending their homeland and annexed much of E. Europe for their trouble. The Western Allies, not subject to land bourne invasion, freed Western Europe from the Nazis.

They certainly thought so at the time - hence the betrayal of Yalta ( Churchill gives Poland to Russia - Roosevelt too sick to do diddly squat)
