So expect gazzillions to be pumped into green "initiatives" for no benefit whilst other calls on the public purse go begging. I'd hoped that labour would not continue our (the tories) folly. Why do politicians of all sides ignore the simplest of arithmetic? Nothing we do makes any difference. Only the big emitters can do that.

I can't understand the frantic rush.If we reached 'Net Zero. tomorrow, it wouldn't make an ounce of difference. And the idea that anyone anywhere would 'follow our example' is laughable.By all means try and put right the problems of polution, but not in a way that takes money out of the pockets of people now.

Might our exemplary behaviour not shame them into action?

Are you for real! Perlease, do you really think China/India/USA et al are going to destroy their economies because we have set some sort of an "example". We are one of the top climate change responders in the world, we have wasted billions on cleaning up the planet, not one bit.

If we all say someone else should do something, then we are doomed.

We can't tell others what to do if we don't walk the talk.

Why do politicians always think we have to take the lead? Why? Isn't it other mugs turn for a change and we can play catch up when we have seen them making the sacrifices.

Starmer wants to present himself as all things to all people.  He's failing.

I can't understand the frantic rush.

If we reached 'Net Zero. tomorrow, it wouldn't make an ounce of difference.

Why is he trying to appease eco nut jobs who are a tiny minority?

This could be an open goal for the Tories if the had some spine.

//Why is he trying to appease eco nut jobs//

Maybe because some of them are Labour donors?

And they of course will benefit big time from this policy.

Surely we are not 'taking the lead', we are doing what we agreed to do at international conferences on climate change.

AH: "If we reached 'Net Zero. tomorrow, it wouldn't make an ounce of difference." - forget net zero, if we reached actual zero it would make no difference.

So let's not bother, eh?

TTT, even your heroine TGL recognised the problem earlier than most. She was a scientist by background after all.

13:45 I'm not saying there's not an issue. I'm saying that anything we, the UK, do is pointless. I am all for cutting pollution, recycling etc but trashing our economy for no gain to the world is madness.

Hopkirk, we should not be in the position of promising nonsense we cannot possibly deliver, based on the suffering of strangers.

We are not a major player on the world stage anymore, our politicians like to pretend we still are because, by definition, they are egotistical who like playing 'statesman' as am ego-massaging game.

A plague on all of them.

As I have said before, any policy on ridding us of oil used as fuel (which I have no problem with) has to be one where we can take all along.  i.e. the poor should not be left behind(which they are currently and will be even more with SKS's policy)

It needs to be over 50-75 years, with goals along the way.

Net Zero of course is rubbish, and,IMHO, should be based on pollution which is tangible and there can be no argument about.
