If I may also to the women left at home who would have known  the likelihood they would never see those young men again, who would smile and say  go.....

And not in praise or celebration but in  memory of those on the other side who by misguided patriotism,or fear of the repercussions fought too.  I expect their loved ones thought them brave.

Only through the passing of years and the understanding of history  can we begin to cast aside the  nationalistic aspects and  while being aware of the sacrifices of all those involved be proud that they  lived, wonder at their courage, and accept the sorrow that so many died.

I'll raise a glass to my father and his comrades - they travelled across the channel on D+1 in a cold, wet, dangerous, unseaworthy landing-craft - to land on a beach in France, under enemy fire, to help make their country safe.

Whatever we think of the UK today, without their sacrifices it would be immeasurably worse.

Yes, I and OH will be raising glasses. he was 12 and remembers hearing about it.

We've also been to the beaches and Arromanche. To see it makes you wonder how they did it.  Such courage. I'll never forget.

This thread was started in good faith by someone (Sandy) who is a decent human being and it has been derailed by a short-sighted narrow-minded idiot.

Any war is wrong.  Showing empathy for the civilians of Gaza is not the same as supporting terrorism.  Sitting down with terrorists in an attempt to find peaceful solutions is not the same as supporting terrorists.

No wonder people have stopped posting here.  It has become a toxic place to visit
