The police are closing some of London's streets this weekend so that everyone can enjoy, 'Pakistani Independence Day'. I hope you will you be celebrating. Will you?

Do they mean us?  They surely do.                                      (Derek Jameson)

Eh?  If people wish to celebrate with house-parties etc., fine.  It is nothing to do with the rest of the country and shoud not impinge.  This is not acceptable.

Agreed Jourdain. Unacceptable. May as well shut down London with all these 'Independence Day' celebrations.

They're probably closing roads because they are expecting right wing idiots to cause trouble.

I'll be celebrating the fact that it annoys you.

I wouldn't have heard of it otherwise, so thanks for heads up.

Roads are closed for carnivals.  Roads are closed for Christmas parades.  Not sure what the problem is.

237SJ - if others weren't making a big thing about this and threatening to spill out into the streets, then there would be no reason for anyone to be out protesting about it, would there?  So that's no answer.

It has no place in the UK.  People should not be publicly celebrating the day outside their own homes and community centres.  I.E.- they have left Pakistan and settled here, so it is a private matter only and shouldn't really merit more than a personal thought.  Or are you saying that immigrants are not truly integrated?

Well, I live in London and I haven't heard a thing about it, let alone a big thing.  No different to Chinese New Year celebrations, Diwali or anything else.  Maybe because Pakistanis are Muslem, that's what upsetting people from afar.

'Muslim' - typo

I think it's probably more to do with the Pakistanis celebrating their independence from Britain. Then coming here to live.

So like India then, but Diwali doesn't seem to upset people

is it Pakistan ( or Bangla) that has never had a democratically elected govt? - army always 'helping'

andres, they didn't become independent from Britain.

Pakistan's Independence Day was on Wednesday of this week, with India's on Thursday.  Despite the two countries' many differences, members of both communities celebrated on the streets of London together.

I would have loved to have been there but, alas, I've had to content myself with my daily rations of several hours of Sunrise Radio, where absolute gems like this are frequently to be found:

andres, they didn't become independent from Britain.

erm, I think they did. The standard view at the time was that if Gandhi and Jinna didnt agree, ( they didnt) then they wd be given their own countries to govern.

jno-- sorry just seen your answer. What are they celebrating Independence from?

Bollywood (which is just as popular in Pakistan as it is in India, by the way) comes to London!

Road closures in London to celebrate another nation's special day:

celebrating there countries independence, erm then why are they not living there and celebrating, they love it so much after all, oh it's a corrupt backward third world country where misogyny is rife, and blasphemy is death by mob, wonderful place..

Funny, I've never seen any complaints about massive celebrations in some areas of the UK for the Chinese New Year. Let people enjoy themselves. If they hurt no-one else, no worries.
