Really unlikely. (Unless you believe in the Devil and that they've been at work.)

tragic coincidence

Well unless someonen is able to conjure up a whirlwing/spount thingy its just pure coinicence.

Sometime s** just happens.

All the other yachts and boats nearby weren't affected

Well they were affected they just didnt sink which points to a problem with this boat.  It had the tallest mast and if you look at pictures of it then it must have been pretty top heavy even without a sail.  Also we dont know the state of the keel, was it raised as they were parked?

This sort of thing is often a problem of a party boat with inexperienced crews, whether that is the case here remains to be seen but as it didnt break up when sinking it rather points to taking on water prettyb quickly, and that shouldnt have happened without a collision.

'strokes white cat and mutters "excellent" under breath'

I believe it was his own boat

It was his own boat but its still a party boat by design and he wouldnt have been skipper.
