They are hoping he will hold the place together for a few months, and crossing their fingers that they get through the winter, I think.  

Winters in rural France are dire - all the activities cease really (most stuff is predicated on good weather) and people gather in bars muttering darkly.

He's still acting the clown though, suggesting that the UK can still apply to rejoin the EU under it's dictatorship. Let's hope his replacement is found by Spring then.
