Hope this link works, and I'm wondering if, 'go woke go broke' might not kick in.

there is perhaps a difference to be observed between what is common and what is normal.

about 20% of the uk population is aged 65 or over.... it would be absurd however to say that being over 65 was not normal

Advertising is conditioning and conditioning ultimately results in acceptance.   It surreptiously tells the observer what to think.  That's why some people regard the not so normal as normal.

"about 20% of the uk population is aged 65 or over.... it would be absurd however to say that being over 65 was not normal"

But the claim was not that mixed pairings are "normal". It was claimed they are "the norm." There is a considerable difference.

Probably not. There again the local one have got rid of service tills so I've no incentive to shop there anyway. They appear to have a commercial death wish.

It's all part of the relentless march towards inclusion and diversity - always a bit of an oxymoron to me.

Alienating large chucks of a community,  perhaps by having a reputed racist who thinks the royal family is "terribly white" for example, is hardly "inclusive".

Regarding what is 'normal': during the summer, a German sports channel used a motif for its swimming/water events of two pairs of hands each with the wrists together with the fingers spread outwards as racing swimmers do on the edge of the baths waiting for the starter's signal. (I think you may anticipate what is coming :0)

Yes, one pair of hands was white I the other was black, in other words, 50/50.

I watched the swimming and diving events and did not see a single black person, - not one; the reality being 100/0 🙄

Probably not shopping at Boots this Xmas - but I don't tend to anyway. I just use them for vitamin pills etc..

Mixed families are certainly not the norm, by the way.  Rather annoying that almost every advert seems to say that they are.  I wouldn't buy whatever is being advertised, in protest.

" almost every advert seems to say that they (mixed families) are (the norm)"

I wonder if there any stats about this. I live in west London, and loads of people are brown or have Asian features. And many kids are obviously 'mixed race'.

Also, companies who advertise on the telly do it purely to sell their products, not to make a political or social point.

You will very rarely encounter a black competitor in swimming events, especially at the higher levels. I think the first female black Olympic gold medallist in the pool was in 2016.

There are a number of theories to explain his. One is that in the USA black people were prohibited from using municipal pools during the years of racial segregation. However, that ended many years ago and it does not explain why there are so few from other nations. It talso does not explain why even now, long afer the abolition of the colour bar, it is estimated that around a half of black Americans cannot swim, so that tends to reduce the potential pool of talent somewhat.

I use my local pool and I have to say that I rarely see any black people using it so it may possibly be that they simply don’t like it.

Yes, Atheist, there are stats- they've been given in 2 posts including one of mine. The stats show the vast majority of couples have the same race category- mixed pairings are quite rare (but neverthless normal)

Perhaps swimming pools, like the English and Welsh countryside, are racist!

My guess is that mixed marriages are much less than 50% of all, but I don't see the point of objecting to advertisers' choice of how to sell their products.

//Also, companies who advertise on the telly do it purely to sell their products, not to make a political or social point.//

I disagree. It seems obvious (for whatever reasons) that many people object to mixed race families being portrayed as "the norm" and may in fact avoid buying products advertised in this way. I think the firms doing it want to promote their "wokeness", it being the new mantra.

I am not sure why there are so many mix-raced families shown on the adverts, either.

I think we are quite grown-up enough to see adverts featuring single-raced couples.

Watching a black/indian/Chinese, or whatever, family advertising a product is not going to make me decide not to purchase/use the product in question.

jack...

It seems that some here are so annoyed with mixed families being shown that they would refuse to use Boots. I don't understand why they have such a response.

Atheist - I think it may well be to do with the actress they chose - Adjoa Andoh - who is on record as using the phrase 'very white' when describing the Coronation.

Personally, I am more bothered by the neutral pronouns and the drag-artists used.

The fight back may have started. Check out the House Of Bruar TV adverts.

You may have to go to YouTube

They make fresh snow look brown.😃

Around 40% of white Americans cannot swim, so not a huge difference.

To be honest I shop where I like.  Pay absolutely no attention to adverts at Christmas or at any other time of the year.
