The lawyers of Ashley Cole are looking for internet users willing to be interviewed about being a possible witness in a court case. What are your views on this? Would you be prepared to give evidence? I think its a bit of a controversial thing to ask. Who is going to want to give evidence?????

I'll have to tread carefully here... Basically, it appears the publications concerned never named Cole. The case Cole's lawyers want to make is that they tried to mention him indirectly and hoped that readers would understand who they meant. To back them up, it would help if they could find people who did name Cole in chatrooms, blogs etc: this would prove that the hints in print worked and people did understand who the original story was about. This is turn would help prove the allegations that Cole was libelled. If you gave evidence they'd be hoping you'd say something like 'Oh yes, it was obvious what footballer they were talking about!'

The risk is of course that if you named Cole in a chatroom somewhere then maybe you libelled him. They'd probably have to give any volunteer witnesses a cast-iron guarantee that they wouldn't also be sued. Tricky.

Yes thats what I suspected. Its a really dodgy area. The post here has been deleted but I expect it is still kept safe somewhere. I feel cautious even talking about this now! Not that I ever named anyone. It was pretty easy to find the answers on the net though wasn't it. Plus the picture evidence.

I've never heard of lawyers using this kind of tactics though. An online questionaire. Very good idea I suppose. There's bound to be someone that agrees to do it.

With the screen name you have chosen you should tread very carefully.

Thousands of people will have viewed various sites identifying the alledgees, and commenting on them. they can not all be sued, for practicality for starters.

People who found the original pics and posted the links will be most at risk of libel.

The NOTW shud have cast iron evidence of the 3 individuals involved in the 1st case because of the seriousness of reprocussions against the 2 footballers which cud bring their careers to an end. Im not sure if the 2nd case was backed up by photo evidence or it was verbal by persons with no evidence.

I certainly will not be testifying to anything as I have done nothing wrong and have no evidence to give.

He's a footballer. There were some allegations made in a certain newspaper that led to him being identified on the internet. His lawyers are now looking for people to help in court.

I been thinking about this. There is a risk that a lot of people will want to get involved with any sort of possible court case just to get caught up in the whole celebrity thing. The lawyers would obviously have thought hard about it thogh. Its a pretty good idea when you think about it. Interesting to watch and see if it works.

Eh? Have you re-written the rules of logical argument or something?

1) You state, in a thread about a footballer's alleged homosexuality, that 'his sort' shouldn't play rugby because that's a game for 'men's men'. The natural and logical implication - you know, given this entire thread's about his alleged homosexuality; that is the raison d'etre of the thread, its modus operandi, its sum and substance, indeed its very point - is that it was that is to which you were making reference.
2) I post an example of a top flight gay rugby player to refute what I believe to be the tenor of your arguement based on the logical contextual deductions and assumptions about your intent outlined above.
3) I'm now apparently being homophobic... and then you go on to compound your original point by implying that you do indeed believe sexuality is an issue in rugby...

er... yes... brilliantly constructed argument there, fuzzy logic boy...
