i drove past a grassy field yesterday and when i passed today all the grass had mysteriously vanished and there wasbig round plastic circular things there. scarey or what.

I think it's a fascinating bit of science, surely not every single one can be done by a hoaxer, some of it must be down to phonomenon (sorry about the spelling).

Even if it's caused by a whirlwind or hurricane, must be nature look at other things that nature causes, northern lights, rainbows, Thunder & Lightening.

They're not done by bored students!

I'm sure the farmers give permission and then charge the tourists for parking.

No I've never done a crop circle, sixpence, but I saw a really good documentary one it once. These students recreated one of their designs in a field, showing how they did it. And yes, they told of one farmer who did just that. Apparently he made more than the value of the crop in that field in the space of one weekend!
