Tax the Fat
I cannot believe that this course of action has even been mentioned at government level, what next tax the anorexics, tax anyone who puts pressure on the nhs if they want to tax anyone tax the criminal classes and the junkies to aid the nhs ppl that actually do something illegal that needs a penalty especially as our prisons are alledgedly so full!!! Rant over

I think it is cheaper and easier to eat junk/convenience foods. I have a daughter who is dairy allergic and has coeliac disease (as do I) and we have to cook everything from base ingredients and my food bills are much higher proportionally than my peers who buy more ready made stuff. Ready made food is cheaper because it is generally made of cheaper, more fatty cuts of meat and full of chemicals which are also linked to lethargy.
I have to say, my food bills are coming back down now as I learn more about traditional cooking. I have a few war time recipe books which teaches you to cook with rations! and a couple of other's from my granny. I did not do Home ec at school so I have had to learn how to cook as a grown up. I don't even use bisto.
The funny thing is, lots of things I make: stuffed hearts, liver and bacon, briscit, roast veg traditional beef suet dumplings etc are probably a lot higher in fat than some convenience foods, but they are more filling so we eat them in fewer quantities and we don't eat in between meals either (except fruit of course). We do not eat any chemicals and we are very much an outdoor family.

Interestingly also, the number of calories a person had daily was higher in 1940 even with rationed food than it is today. The difference was fewer people owned a car, there wasn't any central heating, sweets and chocolates weren't in ready supply, or easy affordable, laundry used up calories, cleaning used up calories and even sleeping uses up calories and people slept generally longer in the old days. Our life style has changed all over.
I think our weight loss is due to people being encouraged to eat junky foods (the amount of other 30 year olds I know who wouldn't know silverside from ribs is amazing) girls don't know how to plan a weeks meals, budget them accordingly, they certianly don't know what they are looking at in a fish mongers/butchers etc etc and the chemicals in foods and preservatives can only lead to poor health. maybe the govt should do something about encouraging farmers to grow organic and clawing back the funding from non-organic growers ad ready meal manufacturers. Taxing the overweight is not sensible; it's utter nonesense.
btw, we also eat puddings at every meal time too: rice pudding, crumbles, trifle etc etc so it must be quality not quantity.

Yes, but we have ascertained that it is most likely that taxing the fat isn't going to work as it hasn't worked with smokers!
Smokers have been denied operations because of their habit, despite the fact that they have paid a large amount of money into the coffers (pardon the pun). Therefore, money isn't the issue ~ the government just want to take more money and disguise it as a necessary tax. Which it isn't.
