I would just buy a good cat food and avoid the really cheap ones and you wont go far wrong.
They also get a lot of protein etc from all the rats, mice, birds etc that they kill and eat, better food for cats than you can buy anywhere.

A dry cat food such as IAMS is recommended over tinned - better for your cat's teeth, and more convenient, too. Some on this site object to IAMS in particular, over the issue of animal testing. IAMS is more expensive than a lot of the other dried foods, but my vet recommended avoiding the cheaper brands since they contain a lot of salt. In all cases though, provide a good supply of fresh water.
Clair, thank you for that link. I cannot tell you how disgusted I am with Iams about this. Peta is an organisation I respect and trust and I know that what they are saying will be true. How can governments condone and allow this kind of cruelty to animals??? Amazingly, a few years ago I gave my Irish Setter Iams, as it had been recommended by my then vet. My dog wouldn't touch it, no matter how I tried to coax him ... makes you think ... I certainly will never support Iams by buying any of their products again! So again, thanks for the link. It was most informative.
I couldn't watch all the video either. it was in America by the sound of the voices, it was so disturbing and disgusting.
I'm forwarding the link to my cat people friends, .......I'll never buy any of their products. I buy Royal Canin dry food for my cats I think it's French so I hope there aren't any bad reports about that firm

ASPCA Veterinarians Review Iams Research & Development
In May 2001, a British tabloid newspaper published a story alleging that Iams had sponsored inappropriate and unnecessary university research in the past. The Iams Company has responded to these allegations.
The ASPCA has requested and received confidential documentation that confirms that Iams programs and processes meet and often substantially exceed the high standards established by relevant legislation, e.g. the Animal Welfare Act of the US, the US Department of Agriculture and Directive 86/609/EEC of the European Union.
In addition, Iams has granted permission for the ASPCA to:
review copies of the published scientific studies mentioned in the British tabloid story
inspect a current university research facility of ASPCAs choosing from among all current Iams-sponsored research studies
inspect the Animal Care Center of the Paul F. Iams Technical Center.
The ASPCA will provide an update to interested parties after completing these reviews and inspections. However it is clear -- based on direct inspection of Iams processes and extensive review of documentation completed to date -- that Iams remains committed to their mission statement, which is to "enhance the well-being of dogs and cats by providing world-class quality foods."
America has much more relaxed laws on animal testing they still test cosmetics for instance something banned in the UK, Iams is an american company which is why this sort of thing is allowed to go on. I feed my cat Natures menu and raw meat he's Barf as is my dog (order from www.anglianmeatproducts.co.uk) they also get JWB on the odd occasion and fresh fish and veg, belive it or not this is cheeper than buying complete diets from the pet shops but you do need a lot of space in your freezer to keep it all in. also none of the vets I work with reccomend Iams most of them like barf, JWB or Hills But I don't like Hills either.
Hi, we had a cat from the Cats Protection Shelter and they feed the cats on Purina dry food whilst they are waiting to be rehomed. I have kept him on this food and he looks a picture of health. If its good enough for the Cat Protection Shelters its good enough for me and my cat. It is a bit pricier than some foods but it wont break the bank
