It is suspected that bird flu came into the country from Hungary where Bernard Matthews has a turkey plant. Why the blo*dy hell do we import produce from a country that has a disease? When our turkeys were diagnosed with bird flu the shutters were put up within hours in countries including Russia , Ireland and many more. Is this ruling another *****p by DEFRA?

You would think it would be obvious not to import from somewhere that Bird Flu had been found, so the fact that DEFRA/customs or whoever allowed this surely is a ********up.

You have to ask questions as well of the BM factory in England. They must have been barmy to allow anything in from Hungary, knowing the massive damage to their business if there was cross contamination.
Once again it seems that mother nature is biting back hard at intensive farming methods.

There was an official from the Foods Standard Agency on the TV tonight. I have aready noticed some buck passing between DEFRA and Bernard Matthews. Expect a whitewash on who is to blame!
As I understand it, Bernard Matthews has a farm in Hungary, and thats where the birds came from, they already belonged to him.
Yes well personally I cannot understand anyone who would eat anything from Bernard Matthews, but that is just a personal opinion, I suppose people must or he would go out of business. As usual what seems obvious to us does not seem to be obvious to others ... think back to feeding dead animals to vegetarian animals and getting mad cow disease. Common sense seems to be a thing of the past,
Oxymoronic ? this morn on BBC. Turkeys may have to be withdrawn from Supermarkets. It is not possible to catch 'flu from Turkey meat, raw or cooked. Make sure the meat is well cooked. So Now you know.
Why do Bernard Matthews need to import turkeys here anyway? Why don't they just breed more here?

Le Chat: you are right, why do they need to import turkeys when we have them here already. Without looking into the detail I would say the rearing of a bird in Hungary is below the costs here even though allowing for the cost of transport. Some saving heh! These methods may put Bernard Matthews out of business!
The reason why we import turkeys from Hungary is because multi-millionaires like Bernard Matthews are still greedy for more cash and people like "kwicky" want cheap food.

Giltbrookian: I am completely neutral on Turkeys as I don't eat meat including poultry so have nothing to gain. I take it you prefer to pay over the odds then?
Your answer in no way contradicts my assertion that it is greed that makes it necessary to import turkeys from Hungary.
