I love the way governments react so quickly.
We had illegal immigrants running under the channel tunnel even before labour came to power, so that is over 10 YEARS ago.
So only now do they start to do something about it.
I remember a Tory counciler knocking on my door about 12 years ago and asking for my support and I said if you do soemthing about asylum seekers and illegal immigrants I will vote for you.
I saw it was a problem way back then, how come our governments didnt.

As per usual, there is a load of legislation / ideas going through that are a good thing.
Ideas include:
1) 'Watch list' of people not entitled to public services
2) Enforcement teams to track down bosses employing illegal workers
3) Compulsory ID cards for foreign nationals
4) Text alerts for people overstaying visas
5) Possible 20,000 fines for landlords housing illegal immigrants
6) Pilot schemes to use ID card data to ensure migrants pay for NHS care
but of course, lazy, cr*p journalism and typical knee jerk reactions from the usual people on here only see one minor idea.

Fine, anything is better than nothing. But the crunch is have the Labour Government actually got the b*lls to remove then from the country if they ignore it?
Further, if someone stays but cant get work surely crime will beckon?
And what if they cant get housing, presumably some poor council will be stuck with housing them etc etc whilst they spend years arguing the toss.
All in all perhaps its just a waste of time until we get politicians who are not just full of hot air(irrelevant of party)

) 'Watch list' of people not entitled to public services
wow...and how are they going to watch half a million people.....great management term that....watch list
2) Enforcement teams to track down bosses employing illegal workers
the legislation has been around since 2002. only eight employers have been prosccuted. besides how is the employer to know that the person presenting a forged passport is unemployable
3) Compulsory ID cards for foreign nationals
easily forged.....been shown time and again
4) Text alerts for people overstaying visas
laughable...not even worth commenting on. Where will you get their mobile numbers from. From their visa application. the application is done abroad...so it is a foreign number...when they get here they change the sim card and get a diferent number...duh
5) Possible 20,000 fines for landlords housing illegal immigrants
see bit about employers. so you want landlords to become immigration officers who can detect forgeries eh.....
6) Pilot schemes to use ID card data to ensure migrants pay for NHS care
has not worked in the past. A doctor has a duty of care to any patient who turns up. it is in the legislation. Doctor will treat first and the hospital will try to recoup the charges later. never works it has been tried before

And your proposal Dom is?
Don't get me wrong all I'm commenting on is that fact that there is much mention of one 'laughable' policy and all the others are ignored.
With regards points 2 and 5 - I think they do have sensible overtures - if they are good forgeries then fair enough - but I bet a lot of landlords / employers don't even bother asking for copies - and that is a big issue.

oneeyedvic...my proposal is this
Migration is a fact of life. It has happened for thousands of years. Air travel has made it a rapid process now. Artificial borders created by man cannot stop what has been a natural process. Over thousands of years man has moved to a better place until that place has been desertified by over use. It happens throughout the life cycle and nothing is going to stop it. plain and simple.
