Are you saying that we should refuse the building of this mosque based on the fact that there is an intolerant minority?
It's it obvious that we're living in a largely secular society where 'Christians' have given up on their faith to worship at the altar of Big Brother, Christian Louboutin and Take That?
We simply cannot complain when Muslims rightly and proudly proclaim their faith by building mosques. How about a little less hypocracy.
What does it mean to be a 'Christian society' when the vast majority, the vast, vast, vast majority of people in this country are unable to name their local vicar?
Why is it that Catholics, Jews, Hindus and Muslims regularly attend their respective churches, synogogues etc each week and we don't?
How come at regligious festivals, they go to worship and we go to Ikea?
We cannot complain.
We as a 'Christian country' are spiritually bankrupt.

sp1814 i agree that there are many people who dont attend church but on the other hand there are also many many people who do attend on a regular basis its just that in the christian faith we are not required to attend 3 times a day and fast and pray in the middle of the day.by the view of the posts on here people will not be satisfied until the sound of bells ringing on a sunday morning across our land is replaced by the sound of a muslim wailing for his muslim community to attend the local mosques.KEEP OUR BRITISH IDENTITY.
You refer to keeping the British Identity.
That's exactly my point. It didn't take Muslims or any other faith to mess up any national identity. Church attendances have been falling since the late 70s.
Absolutely nothing to do with any other religion. More to do with the Brits becoming more secular, and Sunday openings, and Ikea and DIY and the breakdown of family values.
Just because other faiths (Jews, Catholics, Hindus, Bhuddists) have kept it together, it's no reason to blame them for our failings.
And that's what it is our failings.
No-one else's fault.
Please define 'British Identity'.
How would you define that?

Naomi, you've gone and got yourself confused, my love.
Thanks to anotheoldgit, it appears.
The mosque has nothing to do with the London Olympics, other than the fact that both are in London and will probably be finished at around the same time. It's privately funded and has no connection whatsoever with the Olympic bid.
It will be seen by people flying into London. Some of whom will also probably visit the London Dungeons. Perhaps we should close them as well?? Otherwise what will people think of us??
Crikey.

Most people seem to equate 'British Identity' with anything before 1945. Too many people will shout from the rooftops if a mosque is built because we're supposedly tossing our identity down the drain, but never stop to think about the Anmericanisation of much of our culture.
Personally, I believe that culture and identity are constantly evolving things. I have respect and a great deal of warmth for our history, but I don't want to fix our identity at an imaginary point in time 'back in the day' when everything was perfect.

Is the school maintained? if so, it should have a period of 'collective worship' eg half an hour assembly per day at some point in the school timetable.
Children of non-Chrstian faith may attend, but written notice of non-attendance due to other religious beliefs must be submitted. If the school is not compliant then they must be reported to the local authority.
My children attend a non-church school and attend assembly every day. I have yet to witness a school banning Christmas activities.

British Identity defined.
Being British is about driving a German car to an Irish pub for a Belgian beer, then grabbing an Indian curry or, a Turkish kebab on the way back to your home where you sit on Swedish furniture and watch American shows on a Japanese TV.
And the most British thing of all? Suspicion of all things foreign!

Good point on the Americanisation of Britain.
Never thought about it this way, but have you noticed that no matter what city you go to, everything looks the same?
High Streets are now MacDonalds, French Connection, Next, Starbucks etc etc...
Isn't that a greater threat to national identity than the (privately funded) build of a new mosque?
Do the people who complain about the destruction of traditional British identity boycott Tescos, Sainsburys, Asda and the other multinational companies who have systematically destroyed the high street?
Seriously, do you?

I watched a programme recently in which Muslim women were refused entry to certain mosques on the grounds there wasn't enough room for them. A large mosque in East London will certainly put paid to such reactionary thinking by some of the more mysogynist men in the Muslim community. As someone has previously mentioned, mosques are attractive buildings and it will certainly make a change from yet another empty office block development. I think its an OK idea.
