Please help, i live beside aberdeen, and have noticed a new bird feeding in my garden. it is the size of a yellow tit or sparrow,it is metallic grey in colour all over, except for a black top part to his head. (it looks like a jewish cap but black in colour) this is the first year i have seen it. also is there a website that you can go to, and describe the markings of a bird and it shows the species by the description. i dont know much of birds but they are feeding happily in my garden and enjoy watching them thanks
I beg to differ on the blackcap, as they are mostly summer visitors apart from some small numbers that over-winter in southern England.
One of the tits or indeed the coal tit is more likely.
I shall beg to differ also!! THough mainly migratory blackcaps as well as many other members of the warbler family are increasingly overwintering in many parts of the UK including scotland- not just the south coast of england. Take a look at this pic of one in Edinburgh in Dec 2003. So it could easily be an overwintering one- and with the weather we have been having lately could just as easily be an early arrival.
