Come July 1st

Hysteria has already started to take hold of some of the less informed members of the anti smoking brigade. I refer of course to the smoking ban in enclosed premises that comes into force on July 1st .
I was recently talking to my local newsagent who was outside his shop having a smoking break. A resident passed by and remarked that he would not be able to do that after July 1st. Hearing this I remarked to the newsagent, how totally wrong this rather rude person was. The newsagent said this was not an isolated case, it was becoming more and more common for people to make similar remarks as this. He told me one person once passed him and remarked that cigarettes would do him no good, he said to me what if he was to go into a MacDonalds and on seeing a person munching on a Big Mac, to remark ' that will do you no good ' what do you think that person would say?
The Holier Than Thou non-smokers, think they can just treat smokers as some form of low life, to be treated with contempt, and believe me this situatation will become much worse come July 1st. Incidently I am one of the more tolerant non-smokers.

Sometimes, telling the smokers off is the only way they'll listen. I was chatting to someone who was causally smoking and coughing and complaining of headaches and probably knew why but carried on smoking anyway.
I think the addiction makes smokers reckless about themselves and even more so of others around them, the ban couldn't have come at a better time.

I have no time for smokers full stop, they are selfish and have no respect for non smokers, its a filthy habit and July 1st cannot come around quickly enough for me.
I always have been up front with smokers that smoke in my space, i tell them to go and smoke somewhere else, if they don't like it i'm not really bothered, i expect someone to ask me do they mind if they smoke when in my company, but people who know me know what the answer will be.
July 1st as i said cannot come around quick enough as then it will be ''Law''. I would'nt hesitate to shop a smoker to the authoritys, the ones i feel sorry for are the children who's parents smoke in there own houses, who won't give a to$$ about there childrens health {passive smoking}
Low lifes in this case is just about the right word for these so called ''responsible'' parents.

What seems to be overlooked here is that the people who smoke are actually physically (and sometimes emotionally) addicted to cigs. Why else would they smoke, with all the bad things that it does to your health and pocket? Unless I am missing something here...BOO?
It's as much use to flippantly tell a smoker to give up as it is to tell an alcoholic to stop drinking! Am I right or do people actually just smoke because they like it, in spite of all the negative factors???

Hi everyone.
I am neither for or against smoking. I feel that pollution from cars are just as bad but my motto is, everything in moderation. I feel that most smokers now try to be as courtious as possible and not blow smoke in other peoples faces. In Scotland, the ban has been in force now for over a year.
It is against the law to stand outside premises and smoke. I am not sure what the distance is, but it is something like five metres away fom the premises that you are in at the time, you nip out for a smoke. I watched a programme on TV the other evening and it was filmed in and A&E dept.
No smokers were being treated there and no one lifted by the police for smacking someone in the mouth because they were under the influence of alcohol. Doctors trying to save the lives of so many people all who were drunk, and I have to say, the ones who were being treated for alcohol consumption were stopping seriously ill people from getting the medical attention they deserved.
Only my view and as I said, everything in moderation as long as it does not affect other people.

i agree loosehead, the worm has turned.
no excuse for rudeness though, and the only time I would mention it, is if it was inside, and even then i would be polite about it.
i really could not care less about the feelings of smokers ( i don't mean personally, i mean generally)
in that generally they don't like the ban, obviously, but i find many expect sympathy from me about their ''plight''!
they have never given a toss about my asthmatic lungs or my right not to stink of smoke - and even the occasional ciggy burn on my arm or through my clothes - so although i can understand that they are upset, i really cannot find an ounce of sympathy in me for them.
I actually hope that many smokers use this law as an opportunity to quit completely - for themselves, as well as for me, i think they will be glad once they have done it.
so many ex smokers comment on the benefits of giving up - more cash, sense of smell and taste, convenience, etc etc.
my sister gave up to have her baby and she is chuffed to bits at the difference in herself.

Some observations from a life-long non-smoker:
What I used to hate about smokers were those people who didn't actually smoke their cigarettes. Second-hand (i.e. exhaled) smoke wasn't too bad to cope with; what really used to sting my eyes and catch my throat was the smoke drifting up from a cigarette left in the ashtray to smoulder...
At work, light smoking I could deal with; it was the chain-smokers I found difficult to tolerate.
Unlike many non-smokers, I found the smoke from a pipe or a cigar far less offensive than cigarette smoke. Again, it was the sharp, eye-stinging, throat-catching quality of cigarette smoke that was the problem (pipe and cigar smoke didn't seem to do this - perhaps it's all the other stuff they put in cigarette tobacco). Also, pipe baccy often used to come in interesting flavours (I knew a friend who smoked something that smelt like burnt toffee and it was quite nice)

Have you seen a car exhaust on a cold day, all that muck being blown out twenty four hours a day by lorries and buses, this causes more harm to people than passive smoking, children can not avoid it either. i bet all the people who are moaning about passive smoking all drive cars. i am not a smoker myself but i am very often choked by traffic fumes.
you're correct marvelman...i doubt anyone would disagree with you - however, the chances of cars being banned in the same way smoking has, is pretty much non-existant - given the function, benefits, convenience etc etc - so its a pointless comparison to the smoking issue.
i do hope car manufacturers continue trying to create cars with less polution, such as a freely available, affordable electric vehicle etc, but that is a long way off at the moment

i will remember your words the next time i sit down on a bench in town watching lorries, buses, and old cars with worn out engines pumping out black smoke and killer fumes, that it is no comparison to passive smoking, get real joko, there is plenty that can be done about it . but its the same old story, easy targets are least trouble.
Unless I'm very much mistaken smoking is LEGAL, the government make huge amounts of duty from smokers. Everyone would soon cry when there was an extra 8 pence on income tax if smoking was totally banned. The NHS spends more money on fatties than it does smokers, alcohol causes far more misery and anti social behaviour than smoking ever has or will.
I wondered how long it would take for the standard, "how would you all like to pay more tax" argument.
True: Smokers Pay lots' of Duty
True: Smokers only cost about a quarter of what they pay in direct health tretment.
True: Smokers cost at least double what they pay in indirect costs: Cleaning up their filth, health effects on others, fires casued by smokers falling to sleep, Children turned into life long asthma and other desease sufferers by selfish smoker parents, the list is endless.
It's a common myth that smokers are net contributors

Loosehead fair point, but what about drug addicts and alcoholics???? Oooohhh you're a poor drug addict have some methadone, oooohhh you assaulted that police officer but you were drunk don't do it again. Go into any city centre on a Friday or Saturday night and see the mayhem that is caused - through drinking. Or alternatively have your flat broken into by junkies which I have and see them in court plead guilty to 57 other offences and not go down "because they are a drug addict".I agree that smoking is a dirty habit, I smoke but do it considerately and feel smokers are just easy targets.
