If you were at the receiving end of the abuse that my mother suffered in the 70s (bricks through her windows, being spat on etc) but thugs from council estates in South London, I guarantee you'd feel the same.
I absolutely cannot understand why people can't see the link between racist 'humour' and racism.
It beggers belief.
It certainly does sp1814, the difference is the fact that what happened to your Mother in the 70s could have been out and out racism, I say could have, because it could have been because your Mother had been abusive or had somehow upset these individules in other ways (but for whatever reason these acts were in no way acceptable and certainly acts of criminality. Racist ' humour ' on the other hand are just words, targeted towards groups belonging to a different race, that some will find funny but others will not, that is what humour is all about.
You quote the experiences your Mother went through in the 70s, and I persume these yobs were white eh?
Well my Grandson was mugged and had his mobile phone snatched, by a Black thug in the present century. My Daughter in law also had her purse snatched, while shopping recently. Was this also Racism?
I think I have made my point.

Oneyeyedvic - This thread was intended to wish Bernard Manning a sweet 'farewell'.
That was until people like sp went out of their way to wish him otherwise, along with all the other cruel unnecessary sentiments. Surely that makes him & the like, just as bad as the people he's condemning?! Again - double standards.
Some 'fat' people are fat not only due to over-eating, but for medical reasons. However, I'm slim, so what would I know?!

smudge Yes, I do understand. As with a lot of threads in the news section emotions can run high.
Maybe it is sometimes better to ignore threads that you disagree with, however imagine how you would feel if someone put on a thread of someone like Gary Glitter, RIP. It may be that some people liked his music etc etc but there will be a lot of people who would much rather he dead than alive.
I can understand where SP is coming from - it really is not nice to grow up and be an 'easy' bullying victim by your school colleagues - with people like Bernard Manning providing all the ammunition they needed.
Sentiments like "Black people can't ever be British even if they are born here" does make my blood boil, however those were his views.
There are very few people who I wish were dead - however I personally won't be shedding a tear for him (though as I said, I have found some of his jokes amusing).
I tend to stay off AB a lot more now - really as most people as you so eloquently put it people only hear & see what they want to hear & see!
No matter what I post, there are very few people who will change their opinion.
I felt the need to post here as a person who was brought up with racial attacks to give an opposing view from SP.
SP and I agree with a lot of things, but on this I disagree with him.
Finally, In answer to AOG - if your relatives were targeted because of their colour, then yes it was racist. Although I know nothing of the cases, I would suspect that they were attacked purely because of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and it had nothing to do with colour - but as I said, I know nothing of the case.

Oneyedvic - Yes I agree with your second paragraph.
P'raps sp & the like should have waited for a thread actually 'asking' what they thought about Bernard Manning. That way the people who did like him & wanted to wish him a good send off, could have done so - peacefully.
If tributes to Gary Glitter, Michael Barrymore, or the like, ever did appear on here - I would completely ignore them, 'cos they wouldn't be asking for my opinion - they'd be looking for tributes & I simply don't like either of them.
Of course I feel for anyone who has had bricks thrown though their windows - the same as I did for one of our daughter's friends, who was alone & savagely attacked by a group of black thugs, at a funfair in South Beds, way back in the early 70's. His poor parents had to sit by his bed praying that he would survive, after spending a week in a coma. They didn't recognise him at first, as they all made sure they did a very good job of kicking him in the face, breaking nearly every bone in it! Thankfully, he did live to tell the tale & is happily married with a little daughter.
Also, again, a few years back, our neighbour was asked for 'the time' & money by two black guys. He said he didn't have any money, so they ripped his watch from his wrist, then beat him so badly, he couldn't go back to work for many months - he was too afraid to step outside the door.
It works both ways.

Beg your pardon MrBen - glad you think so too.
Anotheroldgit - you took the words from my mouth. I was going to say to NJOK - "If you find this amusing - there's also the Joke section under Phrases & Sayings".
P.S. Oneyedvic - like you, you may have noticed that I don't spend much time on AB lately either!

In the 1930s, there was a German newspaper which used to print outrageous 'jokes' about Jews.
I saw a documentary about this ages ago (and no, I can't remember the name of the newspapers in question), but I posit this because I believe that there is a correlation between comedy and the way that people perceive others.
Onto specifics...
anotheoldgit - yes, you're right. My mother did do things to antagonise the local thugs. She was Jamaican.
That's all you really needed to do back then.
As I've said before on other threads - this country is one of the least racist in the world (I really do believe that). I've been to Australia and heard things that have gotten me into fights (over their attitudes to Aborigines). Stuff that would not be tolerated here.
I simply cannot forgive people like Bernard Manning who made money out of the misery he inflicted on people like my mother who didn't ask to be called w*g or c**n. Women who came to this country to work hard for a better life.
I remember the look in her eyes whenever people like him were on The Comedians.
And can someone please tell me why he's considered 'One of the nicest men you could ever meet'?
Over and above Ronnie Barker????
Ronnie Barker was loved by everyone. Why on earth would you place filth like Manning above Barker? A true comedy genius, and greatly missed by all.
