so the portugese police say that they may now beliveve that the little girl may now be dead.if they had handled the case better in the first place maybe she wouldnt.or if the parents had not left her alone maybe she wouldnt what a mess and what a waste of a young life if she is no longer with us.all involved should hang their heads in shame,and whoever is responsible should be hung.i know this post has been on here many times but someone should be accountable.i hope they are wrong and she is safe somewhere.

Madeleine was left in a hotel room very close to where her parents were eating at the time of the abduction. In fact she was checked on 3 times before the abduction. Mrs. McCann described the area as being so close that it was similar to eating in one's garden.

I'm going to try and find the article regarding the above in today's Times on the website - I'll post a link in my next post.

Now, that's not exactly 'not letting the kid out of your sight', but it's hardly the least safe of options, and would one really, reasonably, expect that there was a possibility of abduction in such circumstances? If you went to eat with some friends, and said friends had this arrangement for their child, would you seriously leap from your seat, vault over the table and charge to the child's room, to prevent pending abduction at any moment? I didn't think so.

I think blame for this sordid affair (not that leaping on our high horses and pointing the finger is helping anyone at all) ought to lie solely with the kidnapper.

From pictures I have seen in the papers, showing the distance from where the parents and their party of friends were sitting, it was definitely not like sitting in your garden. It was a far distance away. Also reports now in the paper from some of the party, now say, they cant be sure if they checked in the room, or just listened outside the door. Heard no child crying so went back to their meal.

They did this on a regular basis, leaving their children while they went out for meals apparently.

there is always more than 1, its just that they feel they cant post their views because people who then disagree become nasty ad personal I find myself agreeing with smurfqueen in more than 1 respect (i have no empathy; feel fairly indifferent to this story) However, i feel i should be able to post without being shot down for having an opinion. According to the chronology above, one guest allegedly may have just listened at the door - but the room was certainly checked before that (even if he specifically didn't).

I haven't actually seen said maps/pictures, but the fact that she was within 'checking distance' (as it were) seems to imply it wasn't far.

Well, the room was broken into, and the child was taken. I'd say that's about as conclusively a 'kidnapping' as one can get...

They wouldn't necessarily have seen anything, but if anyone can provide me with the pictures mentioned, I'd be very grateful. All I can do is again point out that she was within easy distance for them to check, so it can't have been too far.

Pretty much anyone who ever stayed in a Butlins camp in the 1980s (and remember this was before cheap package holidays so that was a lot of people).

Butlins used to offer a service where parents would put their children down for the night and go to the main bar. They would then have staff members going around the chalets listening at doors for any children crying. If they heard a child then they would 'page' the parents who would come back and settle the children.

Also, anyone who uses a hotel's baby monitoring service - any google lists over 2 million of them.

Yes, the parents made a mistake - and obviously it will haunt them for ever - but it was plain and simple a mistake.

krom please can you show a link becausei cant find anywhere that says the room was broken in to. her mother checked her at 9 then her dad at 10, anything could and did happen in an hour what were they thinking, they were 40 yards away from the room, not a bad distance

There was a photo in the Express yesterday showing where the McCanns and their friends were dining. No way is it 50 yards.

this isnt the 1980's and its not butlins its a foreign country and all the more reason to not leave your child alone. they should be brought to task over it, but i dont suppose they will.

Have you not seen maps. There were bushes and a swimming pool between the eating area and the apartment and a greater distance than sitting in your garden, unless you have a very big garden.
The door was NOT locked. It was left open for easy access by whoever was checking. There was a main road much closer than the McCanns were sat. If she had got out of bed and looked for her parents she could easily have wandered into the road. There are also other dangers to a child of this age left alone eg. fire, choking, falling out of bed
etc. Negligence in my opinion.
