Man who burnt wife with iron escapes with pathetic fine
A man who beat his wife, slashed her foot with a knife and pressed a hot iron into her back twice has escaped with only a fine. He not escaped jail but he also didn't have to carry out any community work - as he is too busy with his job. The management consultant abused his wife for not making his sandwiches and not ironing his shirt. What do you think? Is this a strong enough deterrent for wife beaters? Women are encouraged to report violent partners but do punishments like this make it seem pointless as this man clearly has problems?

Unless a man is caught in the act by someone else it seems very unlikely they will be punished. The one time out of many I reported my ex, he got a fixed penalty notice for the damage he had caused to my house and that was it. No bail conditions, nothing!
The police at the time were very nice to me. After speaking to my neighbours they even asked if I wanted to press charges about the previous abuse ( broken bones etc) but I said no. I am so glad I didnt say yes because I can well imagine nothing would have come of it and I Would have been seen as a liar.

Hmmm, i am surprised at you Good(double standards)soulette. The courts have served his sentence and the guy is paying his fine. Surely he should just be able to get on with his life now?
Its embarrassing that guys like this can just get away with a fine.
Its bad enough women being hit by a man, let alone being tortured in this way.
Where are the rest of the do-gooders on here now that this guy got off lightly?
I would like to hear there opinion on this...

Or perhaps he's just a nasty cowardly thug who beat up someone he knew couldn't fight back.
I dunno...all I know is what I've read, but perhaps a spell in a jail cell with a a 200lb psycho who want a new wife would cur...
Blimey - I've just clocked. I hate wife-beaters so much that I've just turned into a 'Hang 'em High' person.
Wow!

Ben, I dont understand where the double standards come in.
If the question on the other thread was is 12 years long enough for stabbing a head master. I would have said no!! However that wasnt the question was it.
Just like 2000 fine for a man who burned his wife with an iron is like p1ssing all over the victim again.
Of course though women have their place and its not in news, even when they may have first hand experience of what its like to be in an abusive relationship.

I think you're falling for that old Tory maxim that liberals and socialist are weak on crime.
I don't believe this is true at all...it's just that growing up in the inner city, I saw the effects of both Tory law and order legislation and witnessed the rot set in.
I know exactly what causes street crime. That's one thing...but this story is worse...because there's no socio-econimic component of it.
Its a man who wanted to beat up his wife.
And it didn't happen once.
I have a big problem with men who hate women.

Not trying to strangle the debate here or anything, but...
We know very, very little about this case. Judges do make errors of judgement but they also have strict sentencing guidelines to stick to, which take into account previous convictions, the circumstances of the incident (including provocation, mental health etc), the effect of the sentence on both the victim and the criminal etc.
It's easy to take the tabloid angle in these things. We see it all the time in those 'Reckless driver kills my son and gets just 12 months in prison' stories.

First of all I depise wife beaters. Yes I would hit or kill a woman in self defence if MY LIFE depended on it or if I saw a woman hurt an animal iwould hurt her back, but domestic violence is pretty low.
However, I find it equally frustrating when seemingly intelligent women choose to stay with the violent man. Yes, I can appreciate the financial needs for some women if the man is the bread winner, and the flase belief they are there for the kids (pathetic, but understandable) but in this case I just want to shake the woman and say FFS why didn't you just leave?
She is a student, so there will be loads of support, no kids, she has friends.
Yes wife beaters are cowards, but so are these bloody women. Why can't they have some back bone!!!!
All that said though, I still hope the blond man in the photo meets a proper man in an alleyway and gets a damn good whacking.

At last you have turned to the 'tough punishment' way of thinking sp1814 :)
Goodsoulette i apologise if i hit a nerve with you, i didnt realise you had been through this. But i still say you have double standards when it comes to crime and punishment. At least this time you had your own point of view though. :)
I am old fashioned and i think if a guy hits a woman then he should face a tougher punishment than if he was to hit another guy.
I cant believe he got away with just a fine of over a weeks wage. But as someone above says, noone really knows the true extent of the case and what went on. But i still say he got off very lightly.

I don't have double standards at all. If the guy had received a prison sentence I wouldn't have been baying for his deportation. I truly feel justice hasn't been served on this one. If you had read my first answer properly you would have realised that I had been through this.
I had broken bones and was strangled or not allowed to breath during arguments (by clamping his hand round my mouth and nose) so that he could always have the last word. There never seemed any point in reporting it to the police, even when the neighbours called them on my behalf, he convinced me it was his word against mine and I have no idea why I stayed with him for 5 years.
