Police are given new powers to conduct random searches of people's homes without the need for reasonable suspicion or specific intelligence.
"If you've got nothing to hide, what's the problem?" said one single mother as a detective ransacked her knicker drawer. "If they search a million homes and find one suspect package, then it's been worthwhile."

"Yes, it's inconvenient but it's nothing compared to the danger of another 7/7 and I still have 3 hours a day to do my shopping," said one member of the public. "Besides, when you fly anywhere, you're expected to check in and then stay in the airport for two hours before the flight. At least here, I'm in my own home."

A terrorists aim is tio instill terror. If I was on a train and the man next to me was stopped and searched under the terrorism Act, it would make me extremely nervous. Possibly scared. I would be anxious and think twice about using the train in future. I would not be reassured, quite the opposite.
