Our survey says....
A "torrent" of negative stories has been revealed by a study of the portrayal of Muslims and Islam in the media, according to a report published yesterday.
Research into one week's news coverage showed that 91% of articles in national newspapers about Muslims were negative. The London mayor, Ken Livingstone, who commissioned the study, said the findings were a "damning indictment" of the media and urged editors and programme makers to review the way they portray Muslims.
"The overall picture presented by the media is that Islam is profoundly different from and a threat to the west," he said. "There is a scale of imbalance which no fair-minded person would think is right." Only 4% of the 352 articles studied were positive, he said.
Livingstone said the findings showed a "hostile and scaremongering attitude" towards Islam and likened the coverage to the way the left was attacked by national newspapers in the early 1980s. "The charge is that there are virtually no positive or balanced images of Islam being portrayed," he said. "I think there is a demonisation of Islam going on which damages community relations and creates alarm among Muslims."
Among examples in the study was a report which claimed that Christmas was being banned in one area because it offended Muslims, which researchers said was "inaccurate and alarmist". The report said that Muslims in Britain were sometimes depicted as a threat to traditional British values, and the coverage weakened government attempts to reduce extremism.

I am talking about religious faith being the cornerstone of Islam and dictating how they behave in the UK such as the wearing of veils etc.
Your point about Spain and boozing Brits is irrelevant to my input. These people are not driven by beliefs to flaunt the local way of life are they? Donkey off a roof is not a cornerstone of faith but as you say " a tradition" no matter how unpleasant and abhorrent it is to me, rather like bull-fighting.
.......and there's poor old trigger playing the age old racist card without putting forward an opposing argument !

There are extreme christians who kill doctors. Now I would be making a big mistake if I judged all christians by that action.
Likewise there are many forms of Islam. The majority are benign and even a positive influence. Then there are extreme Islamists such as the wahhabists. Wahhabist are intolerant and preach jihad. To judge all muslims by the actions of an extreme sect would be a mistake.
A lot of people can't or do not want to make the distictintion.

Oh Lordy - haven't you clocked that the only views which gain public acceptance are those which demonise Islam????
Look at the original question.
It's not the 'trendy lefties' who get any say nowadays. It's the dailymailers. They hold all the cards. They lie left right and centre.
If I was a Muslim, I would be furious with the dopers who spread lies.
And that's what it is...lie after lie after lie after lie after lie after lie.

Hands up anyone who knows a radical Muslim youth.
Go on.
I'll wait.
You read a load of tosh in the newspapers and you take it on as fact.
It's appalling that so many people simply absorb what they read without applying any analytical response.
Really...there's no reason whatsoever for wallowing in ignorance and misinformation.

You raise some interesting points.
You claim that the following are "day to day actions of Muslims"
burning/Killing/ general intolerance of any one who disagrees with them
- Murder of dissenters
- Terrorist atrocities, New York/Madrid/Bali/ London
- mis treatment and mutilation of Women
- So called "Honour" murders
- Refusal to integrate with their chosen home nations
- Tacitly approving the extremists in their midst
Now...when I go home from work, I normally pop into a couple of Turkish supermarkets down in Islington. I don't know the owners well, but I can honestly say that I've never been murdered by them, even though they know me and my partner are gay.
They always have a laugh and joke with me.
Their daughters seem to be happy, well educated and loving to the rest of their family.
As far as I know, they've never set off bombs in New York or anywhere else...
...so it is possible that you're talking rubbish, or perhaps am I wrong? Are these terrorists posing as normal folk?
What do you think?

To all who asked....... Yes I have worked with several Muslims, men and women alike and the women wore veils and the men disappeared on a Friday to Mosque. They weren't particularly friendly to anyone.
No, I don't read the Daily Mail or any other newspaper for that matter and therefore avoid the "tattle tale" stories. I rely on Sky News for my daily update.
Traditional British values are probably things that were done ( and not done ) in the UK way before your time......such as not hiding your face when talking to someone amongst others!
Maybe it's 2007 and time to change the policy of appeasement...history shows it doesn't work

Well sp, by the statement "Day to day" actions, I meant that that is what happens somewhere on an almost daily basis not that every muslim is involved day to day. So is it any wonder that people have the views they have? I accept the media do go overboard, but if they had no ammo they would not be able to. If moderate muslims started doing things that convinced others that they are not giving tacit approval they may start to stop the rot.
Jake, I believe "Life of Brian" was very popular in the US!

Loosehead, four words.
Jerry Springer: The Opera.
BBC staff were sent death threats and others were attacked trying to go to work. By Christians.
Dassie, do you mean flaunt the local way of life, or flout the local way of life?
I'm struggling to get your point, so please forgive me asking again - are you complaining that Muslims stop us leading a British way of life or that they do things that differ from what the rest of us do?
If the second one, why's that a problem?
