How did The Sun newspaper begin? Where can I find its history, how it began etc?

Back in the 1960s we had a good old Socialist paper called The Daily Herald, but in the McMillan days of "never had it so good" and "I'm all right Jack" sales were not too good. It closed one Friday and the following Monday The Super Soaraway Sun appeared in its place.

It was not run by all the same people but some of the backroom folk transferred, and I think they used the same presses.

The Herald was a bit old fashioned and uninteresting. The Sun was intended to be a mass circulation lowest common denominator paper, and most of all NEW!! The scantily clad female pendulobes and unremitting twaddle came later; when it started it seemed quite resonable. Middle of the road wiht a left bias with new fonts and graphics.

I have an original copy of "The Sun" newspaper from Wednesday 18th April 1804, but I presume it was not the same version of the Sun newspaper these days.

It emerged from a fetid pile of effluence, and has remained there ever since - best seen in Spanish resorts by vest clad tattoed oiks tucking into their full English, because they they "don't like none of that foreign muck.............and who won the war anyway" Our red top tabloid press is a national disgrace, a peddlar of lies and sensationalism appealing to the lowest common denominator in society. It is a sad indictment that this lickspittle rag of ***** is our biggest selling daily.

If you want a history of The Sun, I very much recommend the book "Stick It Up Your Punter!" by Chris Horrie and Peter Chippendale, simply one of the best books ever written about the media business.

Hippys answer needs a little expanding. The Daily Herald relaunched as The Sun, it was a broadsheet (you can see Michael Caine looking at it in the opening credits to The Ipcress File), but it continued the Heralds downward circulation slide and the title was sold to Rupert Murdoch who then relaunched it as a tabloid with page 3 girls and showbiz gossip replacing the political and new analysis items. And the circulation soared.

As a passing comment: The first time a page 3 girl was featured in the Sun a reader was prompted to comment the next day: "I hope it increased your circulation as much as it did mine!" Sure enough...
