If you want them to look nice and be even, then you should go to hairdresser to get them started off. Depending on thickness of your hair, they may add some. They'll backcomb, twist, they may use beeswax or they may heat seal. Alternatively, you could do individual plaits, as they grow out they will become dreads if you keep twisting. Alternatively get some beeswax, and a good friend and get them to sectionate and backcomb and rub on the wax, twist and twist. I used to poke the dread through a hole I sort of forced through the top near the root so it would fold in on itself... and be prepared for this process to take hours. It used to take me circa 6 hours to tidy my ex's dreads in this fashion.
