Noticed this statement used frequently on Chatterbank with specific ref to Shannon Matthews case. Why do people assume that you are scum or of lesser quality because you live in a Council Estate? I know many people and friends who live in Council Estates and they are upstanding members of the community who take a pride in their homes and are very family orientated. Council Estate house are now privately owned and people now have the privilege of owning their homes without getting into debt and buy "fancier" house way beyond their means. So don't "label".. everyone the same. "Scum" is relevant in every walk of life, just look at these so called celebrites, Naomi Campbell. Pete Doherty, Amy Whinehouse,I must stop now or I could go on forever!

Its commonly used by the supposed middle class on here .

Funnily enough if they turned up at a bridge night or the round table theyd likely be chased away themselves.

Strange thing people think class is defined by a post code.

D T H ?

I lived on a rough council estate (rough was how it was deemed by people who did not live there) yet I had a wonderful 8 years, people were very friendly and nice and I am still in touch with most of them.

A few points before I answer your question.

1) "Their homes"???? I am afraid council houses belong to the, er, council!!

2) Naomi Campbell, Amy Winehouse and Pete Doherty are probably from council estates in the first place (don't quote me on that, just a guess)

The reason why the stereotype exists is because on the whole, it is true.

I fully accept that there are very decent people living in council estates and absolute bounders living in middle class privately owned areas. But.......................

You rarely get untaxed cars in MC areas

Rarely need the police to patrol there.

Never seen a dumped washing machine in MC places.

Never seen feral children running amock there

Never see boarded up windows

Never see underage drinkers throwing up.

Don't see many scotters on the roads

Rarely have "kebab houses" in MC areas.

No Britney's, Chelsea's or Chesney's around

No inbred scummy mothers plotting their own daughters kidnapping just to make a few bob, whilst their equally inbred scuzzy husband is whacking one out to pictures of underage girls on a 10 year old computer.

I could go on and on and on and on and on.
how many drug users in mc areas ??

chelsea clinton ?and prince harrys bint chelsea too??

where did pete townsend , gary glitter live ??
(downloading kiddy porn)

tara palmer , peaches geldof .

etc etc

how many doctors or judges are alcoholics drug users ?

a sweeping generelaisation doesnt prove anything 1 way or the other

They look down on council-estate dwellers as welfare-fiddling, light-fingered hoodies and chavs but it is the middle classes who are exposed today as Britains real habitual criminals.

Look here.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime /article1980391.ece

Most britains admit they only obey the laws they choose to.

Measured according to the money and numbers involved, fraud and similar white-collar crime is now on course to outstrip the cost to the nation of offences such as burglary

Seems the middle classes aint so cleancut eh ??

Try coming to Milton Keynes. It's riot here. Most housing areas are made up of both council and private houseing.
Several estates are well known trouble spots. I lived on one for about 10 years. Not everyone in the council house were a problem. Not all from the private house were trouble but those that were tended to get away with more. Their kids tended to make problems then blame the council house kids. They always thought they were better because their parents owned their own homes.
It's the same in most of Milton Keynes. Each estate devided into two sections for some bizarre reason.
In a very upper class area in Newport Pagnell where a friend of ours live, they are mostly lawyers and solicitors and other proffesionals. His son, who is 11 now, has been beaten up, had his bike stolen, their house has been broken into and this by teenagers who's mummys and daddys are solicitors.
You can't judge anything without having seen it yourself.
Just because some poeple in council house are a problem does not make them all the same.
Both of you have very good points on this and Need to say Personaly as a lot of Folk on this may also point out .

I live in Not a middle class area but a Mortgage house ( not paid for yet) ...I live in an area thought of as very posh...No way.

I grew up on a Council Estate....With lots of Great people.

I decided long ago to do The Mortgage thing . Now im paying less than those who were my neghbours.

Tell you better than that ...I could never even Dream of living where i am now Due to price increeses.

Thank goodness i only have a few years left on my Mortgage.
Hi Tigerlily - I'm in MK too. I was privately renting in Newport Pagnell and got made homeless when the landlord decided to sell up. I was in a contract job at the time so couldn't rent again. I got put on one of those housing estates you're thinking of (to the south of MK) and I hated it. I was the odd one out on my street because I went to work, didn't speak "chav", didn't take drugs, didn't have family that came up from London 'with guns' and my son didn't go out vandalising. Oddly enough, someone wanted a mutual exchange with me (they wanted a bigger place, I needed somewhere smaller and their parents lived nearby) and now I'm in a housing association place near Milton Keynes Village and loving the peace and quiet. I hate the thought that some people classed me as "scum" because I lived in a council house - I have worked every day since I left college and have a good job as a PA, I just can't afford to buy my own place on one wage. Some of my colleagues live on the estate I lived on and they love it and they're definitely not scum! People shouldn't tar everyone with the same brush but having seen the news and scenes from Dewsbury, it's no wonder people think the way they do!
And why is it that the 'scum' get the priviledge to buy their own homes, then? Is it cos they is cheap (like the price?) or just another example of the discount/excuse/handout etc. that is afforded to them, along with everything else? why should I work damn hard, pay extortionate rent because i can't afford my own home and not qualify for a council house when I live below the poverty line just because i havn't got pregnant again, don't pay my rent, housing benefit f!%k up, get 'kicked out' by someone, get beaten up by my husband 'again' (before you get rehoused but then have him move back in again) or have the patience to wait 25 years for a tower block box somewhere? These are all the usual excuses people give for getting a council home (I have seen it and heard it with my own ears, people!). Oh, and some twit called Maggie Thatcher thought it would be a capital idea to flog off all the council homes to give a little bit of England to the masses and make the situation worse for everybody that couldn't get one after. Makes me ashamed to be a woman, she does. p.s. at least amy winehouse has the money to pay for her drugs and doesn't go out robbing old ladies to fund her habit
Maggie caused the change in peoples class attitudes.

She made it easy to buy council houses , used the cash to fund councils , the result was the coucil stock was sold offf , in later years those houses were sold off for great profits.

Btw a lot of socalled council houses are owned by middle class folk renting out to anyone working or on dole.
infact some just rent to dole families because theyre garunteed income .easy money .
which they use to finance their middle class lifestyles at taxpayers exspense.

DTH?
Where I live there is no such thing as council housing.Fylde Borough Council sold off all the housing stock in October 2000 to a housing association.
Sorry but back again.

Im in my early 40,s

I lived in one of the hardest areas of Lanarkshire/Glasgow.

As stated Grew up in a Council estate.

Nothing wrong with them..... But we a are now having a council estate Mentality due to People not being able to Buy there homes for lots of reasons.

No Council homes for sale due to ....None for Sale

All bought privately.

So due to many reasons ...Say Unemployment.... Nice folk are not in a position to Buy there homes.

Ok we even in a nice house and in a nice Estate can live next to problem Neighbours..

Life is full of these issues.
hardest are of lanarkshire ?
Yes ....LOL.

And thats where im from.

And work there.

Work is the hardest part.
Whereabouts is the hardest part of lanarkshire tho ?
Well Would Think Forgewood, Gowkthrapple ,Craigneueke.... Would be top of my list as i used to live in the Murhouse area of Motherwell.

Where you from.
Yes I totally agree that the purchasing of council homes was a terrible thing.

God help those people who foresaw an improvement in their once miserable lives.

God help those who see competition in a Capitalist society a good thing.

God help those who are now living a relatively good life away from inner city scum, enjoying the virtues of their profit.

God help those who took power away from the Local authority to fix their drains, roofs etc at the tax payers expense.

God help those who see a meritocracy and freedom as a good thing in western society.

The only people who seem to complain about social housing are those who did not have the aforethought of mind to jump on the bandwagon and gain. I can assure you this pathetic Labour Govt. (who traditionally supposed to be on your side) will give you sweet FA, unlike the Tories.

I liken council housing with pensions. Anybody with half a brain should have realised that social housing was running dry. this should have gave them the impetus to get their own ball rolling, instead of relying on the good old Govt again.

Likewise, anybody under 40 will probably not see a state pension at all. take the advice of think tanks and me and start saving. Otherwise in 30-40 years time the same people who have lost out on council homes will be whinging about having no pensions.

Or do such people like living in a nanny state?
Abdulmajid .... Has said it better than i could .... Thatcher did let People buy a dream that otherwise would not have been open to Millions.

FACT.

Im not a TORY ..... But its a fact and History now.
they never reinvested the money in new housing tho.

and they also squandered the oil money tooo.

great idea innit?
