I don't know for sure but I suspect that the death penalty wouldn't put people off commititing premeditated murder as most of them probably think that they're way to clever to be caught anyway!
libertie this is a most interesting topic but im sure with the advancements in dna technology, which of course wasnt available years ago, people should know that they can be pinpointed to a certain crime almost with 100% accuracy.
Stoke, no I don't think it would have put them off. Because they're not considering being arrested, let alone tried or punished. Even when it's premeditated.

Interesting that you don't think the arrest and the ordeal of a trial followed by a life of living in a cell, sh*tting in a bucket, and being villified by everyone who's ever heard of you is a deterrent.

Are you actually suggesting that they consider this and rationally, in sound mind, decide it's a small price to pay for the murder?
quinlad you and i both know that in MOST cases a life sentence does not ACTUALLY mean life ok the most infamous murderers DO live fear but are most often than not segregated from mailine prisoners for their own protection sometimes, but rarely a hated figure is attacked but more often than not they are kept relativley confined to the safety of their own wings.hardly a deterrent for their crimes.
With all the advances in DNA technology etc I for one certainly would not underestimate the ability of the police! However many out there clearly do.....just look at the recent Shannon Matthews!!
New Judge, as the EU works on a principal of subsidiarity and confederalism, I know that if there is already a law in place that is written in a way that it cannot be argued with then European Law cannot override this. Is this the case for when writing new laws etc?

As disgusted as I am, I still cant bring myself to agree with the death penalty. I don't want anyones blood on my hands not even scumbags who do this sort of thing.
Is it the dead womans partner and son that have been arrested?
I agree with what has been said earlier about this case, and that we don't know much of the facts.

I do however think that there are some people who are locked up for life having done some terrible things should be given a choice to do the right thing and be put to sleep!

Organs then being donated to much needy people!

(I am talkign about those who have been convicted without a shadow of a doubt of their guilt)
i work with prisoners and see the same ones(especially sex offenders) get released, reoffend and come back to our soft jails. therefore you have fresh victims, mostly children whose lives are ruined-their parents have to live with the guilt and despair of knowing their child has been degraded and violated in the worst way possible for the rest of their lives-fine i may be out of a job but i say bring back hanging for persistent offenders(dna doesn't lie) and make life mean life.
Sex offenders, in repeat circumstances, should be castrated and should be given depo-provera injections to lower there testosterone levels to stop the fantasising.

the large majority of sex offenders do it because they enjoy dominating people and causing them pain and humiliation therefore castration is not the answer as they would use other implements to rape people with, the only answer is imprisonment for life-after all the victim has been handed an involuntary life sentence.
but the increased female hormones given by depo-provera is a proven success!
Goodsoulette

Would you live next door to one of them? (given that you might have children)

If not... why not?

If yes... You're a better person than me!
To answer your question of 15:41 Goodsoulette, the Parliament of the UK cannot introduce any laws which are incompatible with either the 1998 Act or the ECHR. Which is my point entirely.
I agree with andrea, daffy and jailbird.

The only thing re. DNA, is that it'd be vaguely possible to tamper with it, to provide the wrong evidence.
I wouldn't want to no, andrea. However, when reoffending drops to 0-10% with chemical castration given the choice of living next door to one of the two of them, my answer is a no brainer.

Thanks for the answer New Judge.
