I agree with you Steve.
Naomi - what is wrong with you?
I am certainly not at a loss what to do:
1) Reduce beaurocracy and get coppers back on the beat
2) Dump the failed HRA and give power back to Police, parents and Teachers.
3) Get shot of the hand wringing liberal elite that have infiltrated our Police and judicial system.
4) When caught a sentence that fits the crime. No I am not advocating hangin 13 yr olds but I am 18. If you cant have capital punishment then life shoudl mean life full stop, no parole no min or max sentence. For under 18's clearly there has to be a distinction I would suggest a tier system for murder, and thats what this is, starting from a min 25 years under 16, 40 yers 16-18 and then life.
5) Caryy a life 5 years min. Youth offeners or jail depending on age. Murder someone as above.
6) Jails should be jails and tough. No drugs no fones no playstations. How difficult can it be?

We need to return Britain to the people, but dont look to McBottle to do it and I wouldnt be too sure pf 'Dave' either. We need someone with Balls (not Ed) to sort this out but then of course he/she would be a 'racist' or some other noo labour derorigtory.

All I can say is God help us, whoever your god may be.

Youngmafbog you illustrate perfectly what I am talking about.

All about punishment nothing about detection.

Take a 17 year old kid who's probably carrying a knife because he's scare shove him in a real tough prison for 5 years and what do you reckon you'll get out.

A) A reformed peace loving individual

B) An adult who's had to be tough to survive and learned from hardened criminals

A recipe for a crimewave - well done.

You have to descriminate between those, probably first time offenders like that and other cases.

That is why mandatory sentences are dumb. It's pretty clear that they don't act as a deterrent and take control away from judges.

As for soft prisons - how do you know?

Ever been to one?

None of the people on this board that have done time have ever said that was the case as far as I know.

it amazes me that prisoners get all sorts of goodies in nick, arent they supposed to be there for punishment? sure dont sound like it to me
It amazes me how little thought people put into this issue. It's actually quite scary.

All this talk about capital punishment, third world prison conditions, massive prison sentences. I wouldn't mind if people followed these arguments through to their logical conclusion, but they don't. They focus on their knee-jerk, righteous, look-at-how-much-I-care anger.

And when you walk them through the quite simple logic of why hanging or solitary confinement or mandatory sentences can cause more harm than good and make our streets less safe, they either ignore it completely, or come out with something along the lines of "f*ck that, whatever".

I won't bother reciting those arguments here. Some of them have been said on this thread already and gone right over the mob's heads.
The whole problem seems to be a lack of protection from the police. So they arm themselves in self defence. Maybe there should be a sliding scale of sentences for carrying an offensive weapon. ie for every year of age an increment is added to the sentence.

Oh God-Let's forget what we are discussing and shed a few tears for the poor motorist shall we .
How do you know this Gina?

Wouldn't be the papers would it?

Or the Prison Officer who described being confined to a cell and having food shoved through a slot as getting "breakfast in bed"?

There are a lot of different types of prisons.

Places like Ford where the likes of Jeffry Archer were are somewhat different from places like Strangeways or Parkhurst.

I think you might regret booking your "holiday" there
Quinlad Can you please once more explain how these things will make our streets less safe?
I thought I did that just above Keyplus.

Mandatory sentences give kids the benefit of an education at places like Pentonville.

Kids who got bullied into carrying a knife may come out fully fledged hard cases
And who is saying that we should treat kids same way. But when it comes to murder then you will have to see how mature that kid is mentally. Otherwise there have been the cases that drug dealers used young kids only because they knew there was no law for them. It all depends on individual cases.
pips1, What an odd thing to say. I haven't a clue what you're talking about. What do you mean, what's wrong with me? There's nothing wrong with me. I just don't think that children should be executed, that's all. I'm not saying they shouldn't be punished - of course they should be punished - and severely punished - but this problem really begins when these kids are very young and in order to cure the problem in the long term, we have to get to the grass roots and change the culture. Without a proper solution, we will always have yet more children killing children. There's a complete absence of discipline in their upbringing, and consequently they grow up with a total lack of respect for others, for society, and for the world around them, and that's what we have to change. Having said that, bearing in mind that the current generation will be the next generation's parents and will carry through the same appalling mentality to their children, quite how we go about changing this dreadul culture, I really don't know. However, I do know that in a so-called civilised society, we should not put children to death.
Sterilisation of the mothers in these ghettos , internment camps for thugs where they work until they die , mass public floggings of thugs , and eecution of repeat offenders deemed beyond help.

Mind yu hitler did that and look what happened?
Mind you he was doing it to the innocent .
Maybe the guilty should be punished?

Or i could just be being over emotional whilst still trying to come up with an alternative that would actually be as effective.

Ignore the rant.
gina 32..important point...prisoners are not in prison to be punished. inmates are in prison AS a punishment, and are supposed to be there to be rehabilitated.
belive me when i tell you that there is nothing cushy about a prison environment and goodies are very few and far between!
Brionon, discipline in schools, yes, definitely, but more importantly discipline and guidance in the home beginning long before the children reach school age, and continuing throughout childhood. It's a thankless task for teachers who try to bring some order into a child's life when neither the school, nor the child, receive proper support from the parents.

parents are not ALWAYS to blame as i said in a previous post about a family that i know
This murder happened literally 100 yards from where I live. Lethal injection springs to mind.
