The latest stabbing in Thornton Heath? About 1/2 mile from where I live. Where I live you don't go out alone after dark. I said ineducable and umemployable, and I stand by that, tough if you don't like it.

sp1814 i nipped the racism accusations in the bud before they were directed at me,you seem to contradict yourself one one hand you say that these kids need an arm around them and loving' same as i have said you seem to have an ''hug an hoody'' attitude and then on the other hand you say these gangs need to be tackled head on.how do you propose to do this?round them all up and send them to disneyworld and on their return tell them not to be naughty anymore?yes these gangs need to be tackled head on...with the police cracking a few batons over their heads and MAKING them behave in a civilised manner..and have a zero tolerance of the carrying of knives in a public place..a minimum of 10 years inside if you break this law....take the weapons away from these animals and therefore you take the ability to stab and kill someone.....not rocket science really.
I hope he'll correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think SP's point is (roughly) that any violence isn't conducive to safer streets for anyone, and it's not only inhumane (and frankly ignorant) to cheer on when a presumed gang-member dies, but also unhelpful.
I have to say find all these theories that gang-members are almost drone-like slaves to some kind of culture rather odd. If you adopt the 'once a hood, always a hood approach' then there really is nothing you can do because you've abandoned people. Before you go and condemn an entire bloc of people to some abstract and simplistic understanding of a culture, I suggest you consult such organisations as the Prince's Trust. If you were right, they'd have long given up.
I do accept there is a 'cultural' (if you like) aspect to the way these specific acts of violence take shape, but it's simply ignorant to say 'RAAARR ITS THE BLACKS'. People seem to think that all crime in the UK can be laid squarely at the door of nigh-on robotic gangs of black youths. Consider for instance the huge volume of white young men who brutalise other young men every Friday night across the country: this is so commonplace it seldom makes headlines.

Hang on. One minute you are claiming that the problem is caused by these 'feral' type children and, (if you are being provocative and deliberately racist like Whiffey), black children - but they confine their activities to killing other children. But,
Then you go on to witter on that "we" dare not go out on the streets, by which you mean adults.
No, it is some young men doing well, what many men are good at - being violent. Fortunately it is the behaviour of a minority of young people, terrible nonetheless but sadly nothing new.
Oh and Whiffey, most women don't go out alone after dark - why? Male rapists and nothing to do with race.

RRRRRRRRRR ITS THE BLACKS.......then why when on the tv when they show pictures of the victims it is 99.9% back youths who are either the victims or the perpratrators?
Well... that's my point. You've seen a load of pictures of TV and you appear to have blithely assumed that all crime is laid at the feet of blacks.
Do I deny that 'gang culture' is a problem that relates to crime? Of course not. But what you've interpreted it as - on the grounds of a collection of images - seems to be the sole cause of all violent crime. 'Gang Culture' has certainly shaped the cluster of crimes we've seen recently (and that you've seen on TV), but you seem to have forgotten the scores of young white men who are brutalised - or brutalise - every weekend. These are so commonplace that they don't make news.

I'm black, and was in a gang as a kid...admittedly a non-violent gang...we didn't go around stabbing people or thieving. We just hung out - like most kids.
I lived on a rotten estate and had a one parent family.
I grew up with exactly the kinds of kids you're talking about. I beg to suggest that I have an exceptionally good understanding of these kids. Some turn out well, and some follow a self destructive path.
I worry that people who have no knowledge of these people are being fed a combination of bile and rubbish by the right wing press and forming opinions which are at best...dodgy.
And no...I'm not saying 'hug a hoodie'. I'm saying, don't grin when kids die.

sp1814 now im glad that you have turned out on the right path, but hanging around in gangs today has a whole new meaning hasnt it?its all about ''turf warfare'' i used to hang around in a gang as well,we never stabbed, mugged or hurt anyone...yes we were a white gang but race never came into our innocent minds way back in the 70s its a whole new ball game nowadays......and i wasnt bothered who won the grand prix today.......football is my game.....and yes i do cheer when ricardo fuller scores for stoke city......or jermaine defoe scores for england....although that is not very often.......
