Incompetent police???
So if the Portuguese PJ were incompetent over Maddie's disappearance - what does that make of the British Police mess-up over the Jill Dando Murder in their own country???

Criticism of the Portuguese police is misplaced, and has a tinge of xenophobia in a lot of the reports I have seen (the Antiguan police being subjected to the same kind of attacks).
At least the Portuguese police did not do a Stefan Kiszko and 'fit up' a man they knew could not be guilty, just to pretend they had solved the case. Now that is bad policing.

Unfortunately the fact that the UK police sometimes appear as a joke is not entirely of the making of the officers on the ground.
The country�s police forces (or police �services� as they now insist on being called) have been manipulated by politicians and �liberal� thinkers to an alarming degree over the past 10-15 years. Their senior officers rose to their positions by demonstrating the qualities their political masters are determined they will display. This means undue weight is given to the rights of criminals and vociferous minorities, usually to the detriment of the majority of people who want to see the law enforced fairly and with common sense.
Meanwhile, the officers on the ground are often prevented from doing a good job because they are hamstrung by the very managers who are supposed to be there to support them, but who are instead simply there to enforce the programme their political masters have determined.
Those officers, of course, are not promoted (as they are �not suitable�) and so it perpetuates.
The country needs to decide what it wants of its police force and to ensure its politicians deliver what they want.

The police investigated the case, thought they had enough evidence for a case, the CPS agreed brought the case and the guy was found guilty on the evidence that was presented.
I don't think that makes the Police incompetant.
You might question the trial judge for allowing the forensic evidence or perhaps George's defence in not sucessfully being able to challenge that evidence.
The only real question hanging over the Police which is the same question that hangs over them whenever a case like this goes badly wrong like in the Colin Stagg one is whether the police got so tied up with their prime suspect that they missed things.
And despite what New Judge would have you believe whilst he's delivering his Party Political Broadcast that's a long term question.
The Stagg case was in 1992 under a Tory administratation and we could go back further to other miscarriages of justice under all flavours of government

This is not a party issue. My post was not a Party Political Broadcast. (I did say 10-15 years, thus pre-dating the current administration). And, if it helps, I doubt that an incoming Tory government (or indeed one of any political persuasion with a realistic chance of power) would act any differently.
The country's leaders, and its senior public servants - particularly in the police - have been gripped by a "human rights" culture. This makes them so terrified of upsetting anybody (except, perhaps, council taxpayers who leave the lids off their dustbins) that they have lost the plot.
The electorate deserves better. But I doubt that they will get it.
