Whereas here, he was knocked back big time.
Which makes me wonder about the old saying:

BTW, I've paid �4500 to Travel City Direct for a holiday to Florida in November. Looks like I'll be making my ATOL application ASAP.

I have my flights booked and this year it was harder to find the bargain. A poorer flight time is today �150 more than I paid for it a fortnight ago.
This is due to the increase in fuel prices, but the price on world markets is dropping so the prices for flights should start to get a little cheaper again.
There is still a lot of competition in the air flights market and I expect low prices to remain.
Paying an extra �50 at an high street travel agent will not give you anymore protection than buying on-line at an ATOL / ABTA registered site.
