Heated office discussion re Lewis Hamilton. His mother is white, his father is black. So isn't he just as much white as black?

Yes

But when you get to his position the only colour that matters is green.
What colour is his skin ?
He's half caste - isn't he? who cares anyway!

Light brown I would say.
Just looked at a picture of his parents, and the strange thing is, that is mother is a pinky colour and his father is a light brown colour. Maybe the term black or white is pointless and wrong?

Gromit - One lady at work was making exactly that point today. Famous quote by Steve Biko comes to mind.
Surely any child of a ' black/white ' parent is ' half white ' if he/ she is good and succesfull - and ' half black' if she/he is bad and unsuccesfull ?

Question Author
Was waiting for someone to say that.
What's the quote from Biko?

I haven't seen a photo of Lewis' mum, only his step mum.
They appear to be a very nice family whatever colour they are.

Wonder if this is his Mum & Dad with him?

There are two ways of defining whether someone is black, white or bi-racial.

You ask them how they define themselves.

However, if you are not in a position to ask them, ask yourself this simple question. If Lewis Hamilton worked on the floor above you in your office/business/shop, and someone came in asking to speak to him, would you say

"He's the young black lad who's bay is over towards the window"

or

"He's the young bi-racial lad who's bay is over towards the window"

or

"He's the young light brown-ish lad who's bay is over towards the window"

or

"I don't work here mate. I'm only fixing the air conditioning"

i would say that he is the good looking bloke over there , who is far too young for me!
I would say 'he's the half caste bloke upstairs'.

I am the only poeple who would call him mixed race?
he is quite cute though who cares what the colour of his skin is!
I'd say a person was black, white or of mixed race.
