If the colour of your skin doesn't matter.........
61 Answers
.................................why is all the fuss being made about the 1st black president?
Whilst we're at it, same goes for Tiger Woods, Lewis Hamilton and Paul Ince; I thought colour didn't matter?
When Ince was made Manager, it was a big thing that he was the 1st black (English) manager. Would the 1st manager to beat Blackburn be allowed to get away with saying "I've beaten the 1st black Manager"?
No.
And why is the MOBO awards allowed to happen every year without comment? Can you imagine having the MOWO awards?
I can't help thinking that highlighting the colour of the mans skin detracts somewhat from the actual achievement.
I don't think that Paul ince got the Blackburn job because he was black, I don't think that Lewis Hamilton won because he was black, I don't think Tiger wins because he is black, so why bring it up at all?
I have heard people (presumably black) on the radio today, gloating "we did it" and "black uprising" etc etc
I had honestly not even thought about it until today.

You understand their point though...surely?
And do you get the whole thing about the MOBOs now?
I'm beginning to think that the MOBO organisers need to promote what they're all about a bit better, because it seems that people think that only black people can win.
Is this what you thought?

What I have seen / heard are black/white people rejoicing in the fact that the american ideal is still alive .
Yes that is how tolerant white people are. Can one imagine what it would have been like if the white guy had won. Would we then have seen blacks rejoicing along with their fellow white Americans?
I don't think so, somehow I think there would have been riots.
Did anyone notice the banging together of clenched fists between Barack Obama and his wife? Isn't the clenched fist a symbol of 'Black Power'?

I wonder if Kenya may get first call on the foreign aid?
Granny still lives there I see.
I don't know about this, but what your posting does highlight is the fact that his family in Kenya are a sitting target for terrorists.
Will they now have to have a security cordon around them?
Is this in the least possible?

What makes you think there would have been riots - or is this another statement without any foundation ?
If the white man had won I suspect that there are black people that would have rejoiced and there are black people that wouldn't .
Are you saying that all black people supported Obama and none supported McCain ?
As for the clenched fists - well some one ought to tell all these footballers / tennis players / motor racers etc ( oh , and that lady who heads Camelot , when she gave the clenched fist , victory salute , after securing the running of the national lottery ) that the clenched fists is a symbol of
' black power '

Were there riots when Jesse Jackson lost (twice) in the 80s?
AOG, you're really scraping the barrel here. You really do come across like you're trying to impose a view of racial conflict on everything.
---
There are numerous reasons for the celebration of Obama's victory. First, it represents progress. SP covered this - within a lifetime the USA has changed its image: even as short as... say.. 25-30 years ago, the idea that an African-American could successfully run for President would have seemed laughable.
In fact I'd even bet that 22 months ago, it would have still met with derision had someone brought the idea up on AB. The image has changed.
The second reason, as others have said, is novelty.
On the MOBO thing: this has really been flogged to death. The reason there are no MOWOs is that 'blacks' tend to have a more coherent cultural identity: it's much easier to identify music of 'black origin' in terms of culture than it is 'white origin'. For instance, you don't think of Elgar, Mascagani, and Wagner of being 'white' musicians so much as British, Italian and German simply because of a different cultural history/development.

Compostella I do understand where you are coming from I have been turning all the tv channels over when the news appears about the Presidential result.
I find the 'gloating' and 'black uprising' depicted on tv extremely annoying, I dont think it should matter what your skin colour is but how good at the job you are, and the sheer numbers of black people screaming in joy about the president being black worries me that he has been elected purely because he is black and for no other reason. When they are asked 'how will he change things in the US' they say they don't know?
For those out there who have not seen the prolonged coverage of 'gloating and black uprising' I can only think you were making a cup of tea ?
I don't know if this 'selective' coverage which I find annoying is down to the news reportors trying the stir up a 'racist pot' you would have to decide that yourself. But the continued and prolonged interviews with black people about a new black president is getting rather boring, has anyone asked Michael Jackson his view yet?
The same with Lewis Hamilition the day the news spread we were shown lots of black kids watching him win and they all asked if they wanted to be like him and follow in his footsteps, they barely asked one white kid the same question ...Why?
I think as always it's the people reporting on the tv, internet, and papers who control the story, their in the driving seat and if they want to 'stir the black and white paint and splash it about they will.
As I said earlier I dont think it should matter what your skin colour is but how good at the job you are!

I agree what...the, this is being hyped because of the colour of someone's skin. The BBC in particular seemed delighted that Obama had won the election, I somehow doubt that the newsreaders would have had such smiling faces for Mc Cain if he had won.
Can anyone imagine voting for McCain because he was white? How wrong would that be. But vote for Obama because he is black seems to be acceptable. This is wrong.

I agree Berti, the same people that voted for McCain for that reason are as bad as the people that voted for Obama because he was black.
Lets resolve the issue by next time having the Amercian people vote for something non-human and that way no one can play the race card..........
if someone says Bill Clinton was non-human then that's really lowered the tone of this conversation.

has oldgit written something so bad it's been deleted? Goodness.
Black uprising? That seems an extraordinary term. The difference between Obama and Woods/Hamilton etc is that the latter compete and win (though I don't think Tiger Woods would even have been allowed on many American golf courses 50 years ago); the former had to persuade other people to vote for him. That he did so is remarkable.
