.................................why is all the fuss being made about the 1st black president?

Whilst we're at it, same goes for Tiger Woods, Lewis Hamilton and Paul Ince; I thought colour didn't matter?

When Ince was made Manager, it was a big thing that he was the 1st black (English) manager. Would the 1st manager to beat Blackburn be allowed to get away with saying "I've beaten the 1st black Manager"?

No.

And why is the MOBO awards allowed to happen every year without comment? Can you imagine having the MOWO awards?

I can't help thinking that highlighting the colour of the mans skin detracts somewhat from the actual achievement.

I don't think that Paul ince got the Blackburn job because he was black, I don't think that Lewis Hamilton won because he was black, I don't think Tiger wins because he is black, so why bring it up at all?

I have heard people (presumably black) on the radio today, gloating "we did it" and "black uprising" etc etc

I had honestly not even thought about it until today.

If we all want a level playing field give the white people a 10m head start in the 100 metre dash!

It's never going to be level. There are differences between men and women, black and white etc that make it impossible for us to level that playing field, the most we can hope for I think is for everyone to respect everyone else no matter their gender or race.........like that's going to happen
Isnt it a bit racist to point out 'black' acheivements in the sense that you're saying 'black people are usually crap, apart from these ones!'

Now you are just seeking an argument.

You must have had lessons from my missus (or is that sexist)?

Well he is half white as well.
Rats thats not what I meant.
I mean he has white parentage as well. So he's neither one or the other really.
But I must say it feels like Jesus just got elected.
That would be brilliant:

JESUS
Just Have Faith

If black people automatically vote for black candidates, why didn;t Jesse Jackson get to the White House back in the 80s?

This race card you're playing is getting increasingly tattered. To those who worry about black voters gloating, once again, I point you to the history of America. These people witnessed racism at a level which we simply couldn't fathom in this country and now they have a black President.

If you can't understand this, no problem. Not everyone needs to understand everyone's point of view, but trust me...it's huge. I have cousins in Philadelphia. I called them last night, and my aunt couldn't come to the phone because she was in floods of tears.

Pure joy. I still get a tingle thinking about it. We may have got the first female PM, but they've beaten us to the first non-white leader.

No problem...we'll get the first leader with learning difficulties...David Cameron.

Compostella - the MOBOs...what would you call an award show which covers blues, sould, R&B, urban, hip hop, jazz, techno, swing and dancehall.

Me and some mates tried to come up with an alternative name to the MOBOs.

We failed.

I challenge you to think of a simple alternative.

You won't be able to.

And there's your answer.
Re the MOBOs, it keeps coming up because they keep holding them.

Re the Kerrang Awards, while the music may be predominantly created by white people they don't name it as such.

I would suggest that (in the interest of taking colour out of the equation) the MOBOs could be renamed the "SEXys". (SExist and eXcrement music awards).

Be serious...you reckon that jazz, soul and blues are secist and sh*t?

Why should people be ashamed of the word 'Black'? Why should it be hidden away?

Can you try to come up with an alternative name for the MOBOS?

A serious name?
LeMarchand

Hang on...I've just realised something...how on earth could the Kerrang awards be named the Music Of White Origin?

How stupid would that be??? It would be incredibly vague. Would they include classical music? Folk?

Do you really not get why the MOBOs are called the MOBOs?

It's becoming increasingly shocking to me...really.

All I have seen on TV is black Americans rejoicing in the fact that one of them got so 'uppity' that he managed to get all the way to the White House.............

A marvellous acheivement
arghhh.........

All I have seen on TV is black Americans rejoicing in the fact that one of them got so 'uppity' that he managed to get all the way to the White House.............

A marvellous acheivement when you consider that even Colin Powell was not put forwards as recently as 8 years ago because (despite his own private misgivings) it was not felt that USA was ready for a black President.

Obama does not come to the Presidency with the taint of it having been bought for him, private scandal nor financial shenanigans in his business dealings dogging his every step nor cries of marital strife.

I applaud the american choice, this time round, and am proud of them for having picked the right man.

Until such time as black faces become as regular and mundane, in the positions of power and influence, as white faces, there is still work to be done.

I won't mention the MOBO's because this has been better explained many a time by others.........
@sp1814: Whilst the genres you mention have a bit more merit (Jazz is quite good for insomnia) than the rubbish that they seem to play whenever I've had the misfortune to come across the MOBOs, and I would agree that they aren't sexist, I personally would be happy never to have to hear any of the above again. (Do they actually feature in the MOBOs btw?)

One could argue that if people shouldn't be embarrassed of the term "black", why should they be embarrassed of taking pride in being "white"? I personally don't see any reason to create an unnecessary division by having a separate award for "Music of Black Origin" as it seems to me what most radio stations play most of and it's open to non-black artistes. (Incidentally, surely the fact that Mick Hucknall has won one is proof that they celebrate excrement?)

So now you've decided that the Kerrang awards aren't the MOWOs I'm assuming that there is no equivalent. So how do you really think people would feel if someone started one? You say that it would be incredibly vague, and I agree - just as the MOBOs cover a vague range of styles. How many Jazz fans, for instance, like Gangsta Rap? So why are they artificially lumped together? If it's OK to lump Jazz and Gangsta Rap together as they are "of black origin", why not Folk and Death Metal as they are "of white origin"?
@ Compostella: I never replied to the main part of your question - sorry!

Anyway, I can see why it's significant that Barack is the first Black POTUS as it's proof that America is losing some of it's ingrained racism. Don't forget that only a few decades ago blacks and whites weren't even allowed to sit together on the bus.

As for the other guys I can't say that I find it particularly significant, but then I don't care for watching blokes hit a ball with a stick etc.

@ everyone: Is it me, or are posts disappearing from this thread?
LeMarchand

The reason why the MOBOs exist is because people want them to exist.

Yes, rap can appear in the same award show as jazz. You can have John Legend accepting an award at the same show as Eartha Kitt.

Tom Jones gets honoured at the Q Awards at the same time as The Ting Tings. Should they be separated out too?

Incidentally, I question your ability to measure the merit of rap in the same way that I couldn't form a critique of nu-country.
Anyone seriously inconvenienced by the non-existence of MOWOs could always try starting some. They'd go down a storm among like-minded people, sreuly? The trickiness of choosing between Dylan, Mozart and Abba should prove only a temporary obstacle.
sp1814

No problem...we'll get the first leader with learning difficulties...David Cameron.

Defamatory remarks such as this, against a person who is much more better educated than yourself, does your race, your politics or yourself any credit whatsoever, particularly given the fact that the Cameron's have a son who unfortunately has cerebral palsy.

Pure joy. I still get a tingle thinking about it. We may have got the first female PM, but they've beaten us to the first non-white leader.

Before you or others like you, go into raptures over the US voting in a Black President, just consider how other Black leaders in the world have performed.

sp1814: If I understand you, you are saying that both the MOBOs and the Q Awards cover a wide range of music and that you are quite happy with that. So why the need for a separate show for music of "black origin"? (Surely most pop/rock music is ultimately descended from blues through Elvis and The Beatles by the way). You say "because people want it". Do you think that the BNP are OK then? They wouldn't exist if people didn't want them to.

As I have said, most of what wins is pretty mainstream; it's not as if the most awards are giving recognition to little-known artistes. So why draw attention to the "blackness" of the music?

jno: You're missing the point, (most of) those who disagree with you don't want a "MOWO" award for the same reason that they don't like the concept of the MOBOs: that music (and life) should not be separated into colour-coded compartments.
