Gordon Brown has called for an immediate ceasefire to halt the violence in Gaza.
While his own troops are fighting and being killed and wounded in conditions reminise of World War One, he has the nerve to call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

We all know that he and his like are more concerned about the loss of life to foreign nationals than he is of his own countries men and women.
If one witnessed the wide scale demonstations that took place all over the UK yesterday, it would appear that a large amount of our own citizens were also more concerned about affairs in Gaza than what is happening in Afghanistan.

about 20,000 British soldiers died on the first day of the battle of the Somme alone - I really don't think the fighting in Afghanistan compares to this at all. The latter is more of a peacekeeping operation, though one we appear to be losing.

If you were sleeping in a mud filled trench, 'up to your eyes in muck and bullets', I think even you jno might have a different slant on things.

the other significant difference is that the forces in Afghanistan are all volunteers, professional soldiers. Being shot at is part of what they signed up for. You couldn't say the same for the conscripts of the first world war. I suspect this is also what drives the demonstrations: plainly, innocent people, rather than professional soldiers, are the main victims in Gaza.

yes, it's still a peacekeeping operation; big battles are a sign that the operation is not succeeding.

It's not hypocritical. You can coherently oppose one war on one set of grounds while supporting another on a different set. It would only really be hypocritical if he was opposing Gaza on the grounds that all war was wrong (which he isn't).

And before you start getting all indignant, remember that it's essentially a viewpoint. You can attack it, of course, but that doesn't inherently mean it's hypocritical.

Punching above our weight tag has been hard to eliminate ever since the Blair era. Did you notice the Israelis attacked Gaza whilst Blair was on holiday, the only man who could have stopped this bloodshed.

There was also the Anti War demonstartions on 15th February 2003 (Iraq War) This was the largest demonstrations this country has ever seen and it is estimated over 1 million took part.
