Why is everyone condemning her as racist, when nobody knows which player she was talking about and therefore whether the player does in fact bear resemblance to a golliwog?

You can still buy these dolls, from small to large. I think they're just called gollies now.

SPCJ242 - have you ever heard the word 'p@ki' used affectionately - yes - by Prince Harry - if you heard him talking, he referred to the chap with affection. As I have repeatedly said, I am of Asian descent and have absolutely no issue with this word.

naomi - You cannot compare ginger haired people, people with big noses etc with racism. How many times have the aforementioned people been enslaved? How many political parties are there that want all ginger haired people to be forced from the UK? How many groups of youths went out looking for people with big noses to hurt on a Friday or Saturday night? Sorry but the analogy just does not work.

Vic, I think it does work. We all have to live in this world, we all have our crosses to bear, and we all have to deal with it. Yes, slavery did happen, but are you suggesting that because it happened, anyone with a black skin must treated differently to the rest of society - even if their ancestors were never slaves? Why? That attitude serves only to separate black people from society, It makes them different. As for gangs, what about gangs of black youths who go in search of white gangs to beat up? Whats their excuse?

Velvetee has said she's reported this thread for racist remarks, but I can see little here that I would consider to be racist. People are simply discussing an issue, but this is a typical example of what happens the moment something like this is mentioned. We have other people on AB who cry racist simply because someone disagrees with them, even if the subject under discussion is unrelated to race. The fact is sometimes people, black, white, or green, aren't nice to each other - and we've all been on the receiving end at one time or another. I would like to see a world where people are just people, and I believe that if we were to stop this nonsense, then any perceived differences would evaporate, and the political parties who want black people forced from the UK, rather than being seen as a threat, would become a laughing stock, as they should be to anyone with an iota of sense. Im convinced that this sort of political correctness serves only to encourage the negativity of the issue of colour, and that its those who champion it who are, in the main, responsible for exacerbating the problem and for creating even deeper divisions. If this person hadnt highlighted what Carole Thatcher said, it wouldnt have been an issue. Like many who play the race card, hes simply a man bent on causing trouble - and sadly, because we adhere to this ridiculous notion of political correctness, weve allowed him to succeed.
What has happened to Britain? We've been taken over by the PC brigade. It's ridiculous.

Yeah, right, what's wrong with pointing out that someone looks like a golliwog is they do look like one? Eh? Eh? We're being told what we can think and say!

I've also noticed that dark brown skin looks more similar in colour to excrement than white skin does. What's wrong with pointing that out in the middle of a TV corporation? If Simon Cowell said that a black contestant on X Factor "looked like a piece of sh*t", I bet there'd be complaints about that too! Crazy! Political correctness gone mad.

Seriously, what's the world coming to? You can't say anything anymore. I live across the road from a black family and when I daub racial abuse on their walls in my own faeces as a joke, they get all offended. It's pathetic. They're simply bent on causing trouble.

I abhor racism and have little time for racists of any nationality.

I have read this thread again and found some ignorant remarks, some excellent comments and lots in between.

I have seen nothing to report for being racist, just a healthy debate between widely different people.
I would have to see a photo of the person who was called a golliwog. Maybe they do indeed look like a golliwog. I look like a teddy bear. If people referred to me as a teddy bear, I wouldn't take offense.

Or maybe I would GRRR! (knives out) >:-D

Your rights are NOT being eroded, you're just being asked to have common decency for you fellow man and not say things that are going to make them upset, offended or angry.

Couldn't agree more nick, but the trouble is, it seems that the only people who are allowed to enjoy this 'common decency' are people with a dark skin.
You know who the most oppressed minority in Britain are? White, straight, middle-class men!

Yeah!
Maybe she has dementia like her mother?

I have always held a certain amount of respect for my old sparring partner Gromit, but after he found the need to post such an insensitive remark as the one above, he has now gone down in my estimate to the lowest on this site, there I no need to give their names everyone knows them.

If unfortunately his Mother also suffered from that horrible illness Dementia, and someone on the site suggested that Gromit perhaps had dementia just like his mother, I wonder if he might not also think that this was more offensive than saying someone looked like a ********?
Where is this country going?

A person is snitched on by a so called colleague and then sacked for making a humourous comparison. All seems reminisce of Nazi informers and the Gestapo to me.

If this person was so offended by Carol Thatcher's comment why didn't they approach Carol herself instead of taking the cowardly and underhanded way of reporting her to the BBC.

Incidently comedian Jo Brand was also in the 'Green Room'. This is the person who on stage before thousands and on TV before millions came out with this:

She was saying that a list of BNP member's addresses had been posted on the internet.

She then went on to say "we all know now where to post 'Poo' through their letter boxes".

No mention on her losing her job, for this 'inciting a act of violence ' remark.
Chiles did challenge Carole at the time, as did Jo Brand.

We will never know who sold the story to the press - it could have a member of the production team
Perhaps you don't get the joke, AOG. The far-right used to do the same to black people, either daubing it on their walls or putting it through their letterboxes.

It's about like when you didn't get Trevor McDoanld's joke about Bernard Manning.
It was a flippant remark and I am sorry if it offended you.

Margaret Thatcher has been diagnosed with dementia and this is well known and has been widely reported. Some forms of dementia are caused by a fault in the genes which are passed to their children. Carole Thatcher, a 55 year old woman either has never learned or has forgotten that likening people to golliwogs is frowned upon in this day and age.

You yourself may be disappointed that you cannot refer to black people as golliwogs anymore, but times and what is acceptable change.

Just for the record, my Grandmother had Alzheimer's, so I am aware of how horrible the condition is.

This word was censored. Is it because they have more rights over the border and I am just English?

Before you all start chucking rocks over the wall, it is a dig at Answer Bank and not the Jocks.
You could try writing to your MP?
