Why the hatred against religion?
95 Answers
Please, please, please I don't want to hear the usual ranty arguments against the existence of God or afterlife, I just want to know why the hatred against religious belief. Nobody today is forced to go to church and the Church no longer sets the standards or forms the opinions of our society, so what's the problem? Why the anti-religious posters on the sides of buses? Why does this ant-religious sentiment continue at all?

When's the last time you heard an Atheist complain about the fact that there are signs 'advertising' religion outside every church premises in the country? Very, very rarely, if ever.
I therefore think that it seems to be the 'religious' people that have a problem with 'non-believers', rather than the other way round. Non-religious types generally don't give a t0ss one way or another.

Hatred is perhaps a little strong but...
Religion is irrational the continued support for it denegrates rational logical idea.
But I'm willing to live with that
I'm not willing to live with the fact that we have purveyors of superstition in the form of bishops in the house of Lords pronouncing on the laws of this land.
I'm not willing to live with religion in our publically financed schools - I'm not talking about RE lessions here - I'm talking about the mandatory act of worship.
If rational thinkers don't continue to stand up and say "This is nonsense". Then before you know it we'll have creationism being taught in schools.
It's taken centuries of struggle to wrestle power out of the hands of the church and I'll be damned (excuse the irony) if my generation is going to give them a door back in.

Religion is based on belief, you either believe in God or you don't. Those posters on buses are just expressing a belief that God doesn't exist in just the same way that posters outside churches extol the virtues and belief of God.
Each religion claims that theirs is the only true God and as a result does effect opinion and standards.O.K. so we don't have the mass religious armies that were prevalent in the times of the Crusades but religious fervor is responsible for the unrest in the Muslim world.
Don't forget that in the Christian world churches are usually prominent buildings that dominate the skyline and that our laws are based on religious doctrine so religion is bound to cause contention. We have Roman Catholic and C of E schools, mosques and Muslim schools so opinion and influence in society is unavoidable.
Religious zealots only have to demonstrate verbally or forcibly and opinion is formed. It is for these reasons that religious hatred exists.

This is really really important
Atheism is not expressing a faith that God does not exist
This is a slander put about by religionists to try to lump atheism in the same irrational boat.
Is it a "faith" that trolls and Unicorns and leprechauns don't exist?
No, not really
To be purely rational we have to accept the vanishingly small possibility, the billions to one against that they exist but the probability is so small we just say they don't exist.
God is like that.
It's absolutely not the same as believing that carpenters walk on water and get up from the dead, because it says so in some magic book

Well the first part of your question has gone t1ts up.
People like to be right, they like to say they're right and they love to say why they're right. This is equally true of people on either side of the religious or non-religious divide.
It really boils down to the fact that some people like to say come on in the water's lovely.
As for the adverts I've no quarrel with them.

For hundreds of years people have been subjected to religious views and have led them to lead pretty sad lives filled with fear about what would happen to them if they strayed from the flock. No now people are more liberated and encouraged to think for themselves and religion is no longer part of the majority of lives. What is wrong with displaying a cheerful message that says:
Theres probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life.
I find it rather uplifting.

To some, the arguments against religion laid out above seem as indoctrinated in irrationality and intolerance as medieval religion and right wing fundamentalists. Full of scorn and propaganda which is similar to what the church did a generation back, and what militant Islamists are doing now.
Lefty, I agree with you that the advertisement should be viewed as positively uplifting. Only the most irrational people would think anything more or less of it.

Hi Octagonal - thanks for agreeing with me. I don't belong to any particular groups, be they religious or not. I am just me with my own set of morals and beliefs. The advert is not in the least upsetting or doesn't belittle anybody with religious beliefs.
If a religious organisation feels that it is OK to confront people with their beliefs then surely others should be able to do the same, (as long as no-one is hurt or offended).

Yeah i got it lofty, cheers! What we should be teaching kids in primary school to nip this all in the bud before it gets out of hand as they get older,is yes believe in god or not,but as parents are you happy when your kids fight, would you be happy if they killed each other? Of course not so would god be happy if you fought and killed? The key is intergration, education and unification because when people get segregated thats when the messages of peace start becoming twisted.
Lifty of course I agree with you on that, but the bit about you having morals.???! I jest of course.

I think that is how the atheists felt, and what prompted the advert originally wasnt it?
tambourine, thats not a congregation, this is a congregation.

Organised religion is just so corrupt. If you don't adhere to their rules and principles, instead choosing another set, you are damned.
I had two Mormons (Church of the Latter Day Saints) knock on my door. They told me that if I didn't let Jesus Christ rule my life, I would go to hell. I was also expected to surrender 30% of my net income to their church.
What about the Vatican refusing to recognise the Scrolls? Anything that contradicts their version of events is branded Heresy.

I don't hate religious belief, I truely believe live and let live.
However all around me all I see are people of faith who want me to follow rules set by thier particular faith.
The posters on the bus a point of view that I very much agree with, and although I understand why it remains, the word probably could be omitted.
Society has become more knowledgable and as it has done so, it has become more secular. The Athiest does not have an organisation to "promote" its cause. It has no meetings on Sunday where we get preached at and are brain washed.
In one hundred years religion will be seen as what it really is, a superstition for which there is no basis.
Your question shows the problem with all faiths which is you believe you are right, you know your right so why argue. You mistake open discussion for hate.
Time to get a thicker skin.
