End of the world???

Silly question or serious however you look at it...

I have heard the end of the world is in 2012 and the people that tell me are very serious...

I don't know wether to laugh or cry...

What are you views on this???

Saw a documentary about this on sky the other night and it does seem that all predictions by the more famous in this world stop after December 21st 2012, so yes there could be something in it I suppose.

If a giant meteorite is going to crash into the Earth and we are all going to die, what can anyone do about it?

This is because the Mayan calendar runs out on 21st December 2012 and some people believe that this is also when the world ends.

What is more likely is that when this calendar was being devised thousands of years ago, they had no need to go to any more than 2012 and so why bother?

We have a computer system where we enter 31-dec-4000 to mean never ending. It doesn't mean that the world ends in the year 4000 but to us, like the Mayans, that date is so far in the future as to suit our needs.

The end of the world has been predicted pretty much since it started. The year 2000 will kill us, The Hadron Collider will kill us, The Mayan calendar will kill us.

I guess one day they will be right but it's more likely to be the Sun turning supernova in about 6 billion years that will do it.

Once 2012 has passed, I believe the next one is a giant asteroid in 2028.

To be fair the calender that Nostradamus used to predict world events was different to the one we use now. As a result of this change twelve years never happened.
I would'nt lose any sleep over it, remember the milennium bug?
The end of the world (according to some scientists) will come from an overdue flu pandemic, a volcanic super eruption in Yellow Stone national park in America or a collapse of the Icelandic land shelf.
Oh and global warming and asteroid strikes, and the Muslims, and the Communists....
